Pugh’s Herculean Leap for Marvel
The 29-year-old performer, who is returning as Yelena Belova in “Thunderbolts,” discussed the harrowing stunt in the May issue of Who What Wear, released on Thursday, May 1.
“The instant I leaped, time and again, my mind yelled, ‘Oh, well, you messed up. You’re going to perish,'” Pugh recalled, describing her experience jumping from the 2,227-foot Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, the world’s second-tallest structure.
Even more astonishing, Pugh. taped the jump nine times over two days, a detail she shared in her interview.
Overcoming Fears: Pugh’s Mental Fortitude
“I could talk myself into doing that. I could plunge down the mountain,” she said regarding her ability to perform the stunt multiple times. “I was like, ‘That’s not a productive thought to have. Whoops.'”
“I can essentially convince myself not to heed my instincts,” she added.
Details of the Death-Defying Stunt
The “Midsommar” actress revealed that, although she did not actually jump 2,227 feet from the Merdeka 118, she did leap approximately six feet from the building. She was suspended by a harness over the Malaysian city before the crew hauled her back to safety.
While Pugh labeled the endeavor “crazy” and “wild,” she also confessed that she “adored” executing it.
“Loved it,” she told Who What Wear on Thursday. “Wild, though. Wild.”
Throughout the interview, the “Thunderbolts*” star discussed the challenges of self-acceptance amidst Hollywood’s daunting expectations, particularly during promotional photoshoots.
Navigating Hollywood’s Beauty Standards
“You don’t understand the process. You feel extremely self-conscious in the attire,” she said. “You feel like you’re not honoring them. You’re not achieving what a model could accomplish.”
However, Pugh acknowledged that she has gained “more self-assurance” regarding the modeling aspects of being a young actress.
Growing Confidence and Future Aspirations
“After repeated shoots, you improve, and you gain confidence,” she explained. “You view the images, and you see the results, and you think, ‘Okay, that looks fantastic. I’m going to ensure that I can advocate when a specific garment isn’t suitable.'”
“It’s incredibly revealing because it’s you being attractive,” Pugh added, “which is like everyone’s internal struggle.”
Regarding her plans post-“Thunderbolts,”— set to premiere on Friday—the “We Live in Time” actress expressed her desire to pursue a role in a Western film, aiming for a gritty, rugged appearance.
“I want to be like a genuinely greasy, filthy character,” Pugh declared. “I want to have, like, mountain fluff on my face – like a grounded person, someone from the earth.”
Additionally, she aspires to begin writing and helming her own productions. “I believe my writing and directing phase is drawing nearer,” she concluded.
