A Maryland resident is cautioning travelers about the risks of visiting ‘unhygienic spas’ after a foot infection stemming from a pedicure resulted in the amputation of his leg.
A bone infection, commonly known as osteomyelitis, occurs when bacteria or fungi infiltrate the bone marrow, possibly leading to permanent bone damage and tissue death if left untreated.
Osteomyelitis is frequently acquired from a wound or surgical site on the skin and can quickly spread to the bones through the bloodstream. Symptoms may include fever, bone pain, sweating, chills, skin discoloration, and swelling.

### **The Initial Procedure**
A man, 54, indulged his wife with a $270 ‘couples’ spa retreat in 2017 while aiming to rejuvenate their relationship.
During the three-hour indulgence, a minor cut appeared on the man’s left big toe from the pedicure treatment. Assuming nothing was amiss, he returned to his hotel, only to discover the following day that his second toe had inflated to the size of his big toe. This alarming development prompted a visit to a nearby medical facility.
### **A Shocking Diagnosis**
Doctors delivered the startling news that a bone infection was spreading. Consequently, the infected bone in his second toe was surgically excised in June 2017. Regrettably, the intended cure worsened the condition, culminating in eight grueling years of intense discomfort and culminating in the amputation of his left leg beneath the knee in late January 2025 in an effort to enhance his quality of life.
“That singular session has transformed my life irreversibly. I never anticipated that a pedicure could precipitate such a catastrophic outcome. The allure of aesthetic appeal shouldn’t come at the expense of losing a limb,” remarked the Maryland resident.
### **The Spurious Incursion**
A minor laceration sustained during a pedicure ultimately evolved into a perilous infection, triggering a cascade of surgical interventions. Initially, doctors excised part of his toe during the summer of 2017. Subse-quently, the infection persisted, necessitating further amputations of his big toe and another toe on the very same foot by 2019.
For eighteen months, the patient donned a protective boot to shield and support his limb while recuperating. However, his fortitude was tested anew in late 2024 when he sought medical assistance for a blood infection and a fractured ankle suffered while brushing his teeth. Ultimately, in late January of the following year, doctors amputated his leg and outfitted him with a prosthetic.
He said“ [The doctor] informed me that amputation stood as the optimal course to restore my quality of life. It was also the most effective curative strategy. I assumed it was the best course of action.”

### **The Consequences of Dirty Foot Care**
The afflicted individual attributed his affliction to the establishment’s “unsanitary” implements and asserted that his misfortune befell at least 28 other individuals. However, he chose not to pursue legal recourse after the proprietors fled.
### **Osteomyelitis: An Overview**
Around one in 2,000 Americans are diagnosed with osteomyelitis annually. While the overall mortality rate associated with this infection is relatively low, statistics indicate that up to one in five individuals may succumb if left untreated.
It is also interesting to note that doctors can also address the condition by surgically eliminating portions of infected bone, potentially necessitating the amputation of specific limbs. Subsequently, they will administer powerful antibiotics or antifungal medications via IV for a minimum of six weeks to eradicate the infection entirely.
### **The Path Forward**
The patient now advocates for professional podiatry services, advocating against frequenting retail nail salons. He asserted, “The [owners] had vacated the premises. At that juncture, saving my leg was paramount over engaging a lawyer to locate them.
A podiatrist is the safest venue for nail care. I would dissuade individuals from patronizing mainstream nail salons.
I envision a future where I champion causes similar to mine, fostering accessibility to activities I cherish, such as golfing, swimming, and fishing.”
