The Seasonal Shift
The Rise in Summer Urban Weddings
Historically, New York has seen a summer slowdown in weddings due to oppressive heat and humidity. This trend became more pronounced during the pandemic, with many couples choosing spacious venues within a few hours’ drive, often opting for Hamptons or upstate New York. However, in recent years, reigniting of summer weddings is evident, with couples appreciating factors like ease and financial benefits resulting from a resurgence of local spaces available for bookings.
A spike in wedding venues and the hurdles of organizing an out-of-town event contributed to this change.
The Data & Statistics
Since 2021, New York City nuptials, including summer events, have grown steadily, as reported by wedding planning platform The Knot. The numbers surged by 16% in 2022, followed by an 8% increase in 2023, and are projected to grow by another 8% in 2024.
Central Park Zoo & The Glasshouse: Popular Venues
Louise Castellano, the sales manager for events and catering for the Wildlife Conservation Society’s aquarium and four zoos, noted that the Central Park Zoo hosted six weddings last July and August, with six more booked for the same months this year.
The Bronx Zoo, typically averaging 12 to 15 June-August weddings, also reported increased interest.
The Glasshouse: Chelsea
The Glasshouse, boasting three event spaces, also reports a summer wedding. The Chelsea penthouse, since 2006, accommodates 150 guests and is slated to host over 30 summer weddings in 2025, marking a 38% increase from the previous year.
. “We once averaged 20 summer weddings annually until the pandemic, when business slowed, and everyone ventured upstate or to the Hamptons,” Mr. Guttman, Glasshouse owner, noted. “Now, we’re busier than ever.”
The Perspective: Beyond The Data
New York catering services have also witnessed a renewed interest in summer nuptials.
Restaurant Associates, partnering with iconic dining spots like Katz’s Delicatessen and the Lincoln Center restaurant, has allocated 25-30% of its yearly wedding bookings for July and August.
Previously offering discounted summer rates to boost business, this is no longer necessary due to the burgeoning demand.
A surge in Event Spaces in the City
Additionally, the rise in new event venues has bolstered summer wedding trends. New York adding unique spaces like Hush Venues, which offers seven locations. The new luxury outdoor party-plaza, Halo in Financial District accommodates up to 5,000 guests. The Glasshouse’s two recent additions, a Bryant Park mansion and a Midtown West space, have also contributed to this growth.
Event Planners Insights
The Convenience of Urban Weddings
The uptick has been driven by many factors. Event planner Elizabeth Hall notes that local couples often attend destination weddings, the costs and effort of travel become hardship. “Local events make things easier for hometown friends who can quickly attend”
The Complexities of Out-of-Town Celebrations
Event planner Victoria Dubin highlights the complexities of organizing non-urban weddings. Setting up multiple tents for kitchens, guest receptions, and ceremonies is a logistical nightmare, and may require restroom trailers and generators, complicating planning extensively.
Furthermore, limited hotel accommodations in rural areas and municipal restrictions on event duration and guest counts contribute to the growing appeal of city settings.
