Electronic Arts (EA) is reportedly eliminating jobs, impacting between 300 and 400 positions, and has halted the development of “R7,” a Titanfall universe game, previously in progress at Respawn Entertainment. The restructuring is part of a broader strategic shift by the gaming giant.
EA Restructuring and Strategic Realignment
Justin Higgs, a spokesperson for EA, stated that these “select changes” would “more effectively align teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth.” The company aims to refine its organizational structure to better achieve its long-term strategic goals.
Respawn Entertainment Adjustments
Respawn Entertainment acknowledged the changes in a statement released on X, confirming the cancellation of two games in “early-stage incubation.” The studio also announced “targeted team adjustments” affecting the Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi projects. The statement conveyed gratitude to all affected team members, emphasizing the difficulty of these decisions.
Impact on Respawn Employees
Reports indicate approximately 100 employees at Respawn were affected by the layoffs, encompassing developers, quality assurance personnel, and publishing staff. Some employees have been reassigned from Respawn to EA Motive’s Iron Man project, the Battlefield series, and other unspecified ventures.
Leadership Changes at Respawn
Further changes at Respawn include the promotion of Daniel Suarez, formerly SVP of operations, to General Manager of the studio. Suarez will now report directly to Vince Zampella, Respawn’s co-founder and CEO. Years prior, in 2021, EA placed Zampella in a leadership role overseeing the Battlefield franchise as part of an internal reorganization.
