Fashion enthusiast Justice Omoruyi had just completed a photo session when our encounter occurred. He and his companions were exploring Manhattan’s SoHo district, capturing images for CUNY Outfits, an Instagram platform dedicated to highlighting the fashion of City University of New York (CUNY) students, on a Tuesday in mid-April.
Engaging in Urban Style Photography
“We explore the city to take photos, showcasing our personal style, and simply enjoy ourselves,” shared Omoruyi, an 18-year-old mechanical engineering student at City College, located in the Harlem segment of Manhattan.
The Influence of Thrift Shopping
Omoruyi’s unique and distinctive fashion taste is heavily influenced by his passion for thrift shopping. The bomber jacket he was donning over his collared shirt and necktie was purchased at The Grand Bazaar, a popular consignment market on the Upper West Side.
The Journey of Garments
A notable benefit of thrift shopping, according to Jewel, that he particularly enjoys, is discovering the history of garments before they land in his closet.
Oftentimes, Ms. Omoryui explained “I could come across a shirt originating from as far as Texas or New Jersey, because perhaps someone relocating to New York decided to part with it.”
