Nat Sciver-Brunt has vowed to inspire her teammates to be the “best versions of themselves” after assuming the captaincy of the England women’s cricket team.

Earlier disclosed by The Guardian, the versatile 32-year-old has assumed lead from Heather Knight who stepped down in March, marking the maiden appointment by new England women’s head coach Charlotte Edwards.

Aiming for Success and Unity

Currently on maternity leave, Sciver-Brunt declared: “I’m truly honoured to accept this position and feel privileged that Charlotte, someone I greatly admire, has entrusted me with this role. My aim is to contribute to the team’s progress in every conceivable way.”

“I aspire to guide our squad to triumph, fostering an environment where players can thrive both individually and collectively. Our ensemble boasts remarkable aptitude, uniting under a shared vision. I firmly believe in this team and its potential for substantial success.”

Proven Leader and Key Player

A staple of the team since her debut in 2013, Sciver-Brunt was the obvious choice to ascend post last year’s failed Ashes tour, having served as vice-captain to Knight for the past three seasons. Her membership in England’s elite is indisputable,

Currently, the right-handed batter ranks third in the ODI batting charts. Additionally, she has cultivated a robust alliance with Edwards over the past three years as a member of the Mumbai Indians squad, which has clinched two of three Women’s Premier Leagues thus far. Previously, the duo were teammates during the twilight of Edwards’ illustrious England career.

Batters and Building Leadership Partnerships

Clare Connor, director of England women’s cricket, remarked: “We’re thrilled to welcome Nat as our new captain. She’s enthusiastic about steering the team through this extraordinary phase in international women’s cricket.”

“Everyone is acquainted with Nat’s exceptional cricketing abilities, but her prowess extends beyond the field. She’s reflective, tenacious, and motivated by bringing out the best in herself and those around her. Nat is highly regarded within the squad, and I’m confident she will forge an inspiring and productive alliance with Charlotte.”

A Busy Schedule Ahead

With 12 previous deputations for Knight, Sciver-Brunt’s inaugural series as captain will be against the West Indies this May, encompassing three T20 internationals and three ODIs.

Season Highlights:

  • West Indies Series: 21 May – 5 June
  • Home: Canterbury, Northampton and Chester-le-Street.

India will be the second visiting team of the summer, with five T20Is and three ODIs scheduled for June and July, before preparations commence for this year’s Women’s Cricket World Cup, slated to commence in late September.
