Monty Don enthusiasts were struck speechless as the television host disclosed an unanticipated guest in his home. The renowned Gardeners’ World presenter, aged 69, garners admiration for his vast garden knowledge and frequently offers peeks into his quaint cottage garden set amidst the breathtaking Herefordshire countryside.

However, his most recent posting wasn’t centered around his garden escapades. Instead, the broadcaster disclosed a close encounter  with a sparrowhawk.

Unexpected Guest Brings Nature Indoors

Accompanying two images of the bird, Don penned: “An unanticipated visitor today—a male sparrowhawk chased a blackbird indoors. The blackbird fled outdoors, but it took the sparrowhawk another hour to figure out how to exit.” Monty’s followers were astonished by the unusual sighting, remarking on the gardening expert’s fortune to witness something they deemed “stunning.” One viewer commented: “Wow, that is quite the encounter! A beautiful bird, but I have a love-hate relationship when they target our garden birds. Isn’t nature amazing!”

A second admirer concurred: “What a delight to experience such a close encounter and observe its splendor. A fortunate day and narrow escape for the blackbird as well!”

“Wow, that first photo resembles an illustration from an Audubon book!” another chimed in, while a fourth added: “What an extraordinary privilege. A magnificent bird and outstanding photographs too.”

Monty Don: A Gardeners’ World Icon

Despite inspiring countless individuals with his green thumb expertise over the years, cultivating plants wasn’t his first love.

A Childhood of Reluctant Gardening

Recalling his upbringing, Monty shared how he was “forced” to assist in the expansive garden of his childhood home in Hampshire.

“You were supposed to work in the garden, and that would grant you permission to play. Naturally, I fiercely resented this,” he stated. “I loathed gardening because it prevented me from engaging in activities I desired.”

However, he acknowledged, “Regretfully, I acquired knowledge along the way, and I’m immensely grateful for that experience.”

Future of Gardeners’ World

Monty has helmed Gardeners’ World since 2003, succeeding Alan Titchmarsh. Despite prior uncertainties, Monty has verified that he will stay on as the program’s host for an additional two seasons.

“I never formulate plans beyond two years, but I’ve committed to another two (starting January 2025),” he revealed to Radio Times.

“Each time I ponder, ‘Shall I persist with this?’ But the truth is that I do relish it. I’m fortunate because it’s in my own garden. If the show is produced well, I’ll carry on.”
