Google Takes Aim at Duolingo With AI Tools To Help You Learn New Languages

Importance Score: 65 / 100 🔴

Google introduces three innovative AI-powered language learning tools designed to assist users in acquiring foreign languages while on the move. These resources leverage Google’s Gemini large language model to recognize objects and scenarios in the user’s vicinity, delivering translations that can aid in seeking assistance or initiating conversations with locals.

To explore these new AI experiments, visit the Google Labs website. These experiments are web-based and do not require any software downloads. Simply navigate to the experiment you wish to try and start entering your prompts.

## **Boost Language Skills with Innovative AI Tools**

### Website Resources Tailored for Multilingual Learning

While unveiling these new capabilities, Google is competing with other language learning platforms that are also focusing on AI-driven tools. Duolingo’s CEO recently declared that the company is “prioritizing AI,” and OpenAI’s ChatGPT can engage in new foreign language conversations upon request.

## **Interactive Language Learning Tools**

### **Tiny Lesson: Detail a Scenario**

Google’s **Tiny Lesson** allows users to describe their current situation to learn vocabulary and grammar relevant to communicating problems to locals. By providing context, the tool offers suggestions that can help users understand how to request assistance without knowing specific phrases related to their current issue.

### **Slang Hang: Informal Conversations**

The **Slang Hang** tool encourages casual dialogue, focusing less on strict sentence structure and grammatical accuracy, and more on adapting a colloquial speaking style in a foreign language. Slang Hang allows users to engage in conversations with and learn expressions from native speakers. Please note the AI model might occasionally misidentify or hallucinate words; it is advisable to verify translations using another source.

### **Word Cam: Recognize Objects in Photos**

The third new tool, Word Cam uses Gemini to identify objects in user-taken photographs, providing translations in the target language as you explore your surroundings. This feature is helpful for describing your environment, though Gemini may not accurately label every object in a picture, so cross-referencing translations is recommended.

## **Language Learning Experiments**

The language-learning experiments were designed to “inspire developers using Gemini for various use cases and experiences,” according to a Google representative.

This set of experiments aims to utilize the multimodal language model to provide bite-sized, on-the-go lessons.

Google’s new features are not yet available for every language, at least not initially. Tiny Lesson, Slang Hang, and Word Cam currently support translations for Arabic and Chinese languages as well as English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish.

The aforementioned tools, including other Google Labs experiments, are not final products but are intended to remain as experimental projects. “These are short-term tools that will eventually be discontinued,” the representative added. “We encourage developers to enjoy experimenting.”
