Miami Vice Reboot: Big Screen Revival in the Works

The iconic 80s cop show Miami Vice, featuring detectives Crockett and Tubbs, is gearing up for a cinematic comeback. This new installment promises a fresh take on the celebrated NBC series, renowned for its portrayal of undercover officers battling the illegal drug trade in Miami. Get ready for a modern resurgence of this classic crime drama.

Joseph Kosinski to Direct

Joseph Kosinski, celebrated director of Top Gun: Maverick, has been tapped to helm the new Miami Vice adaptation. His vision is expected to breathe new life into the franchise while honoring its original essence.

Dan Gilroy Penning the Script

The screenplay will be crafted by Dan Gilroy, the Oscar-nominated writer and director behind Nightcrawler. Gilroy’s portfolio also includes notable works such as The Bourne Legacy and Kong: Skull Island, adding depth and intrigue to the project. His recent contributions to the acclaimed Star Wars series, Andor, further solidify his storytelling prowess.

The Legacy of Miami Vice

The original series, which aired from 1984 to 1990, featured Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the lead roles. Michael Mann, who served as executive producer, later adapted the show into a feature film starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.

The 2006 Film Adaptation

The 2006 Miami Vice movie garnered $164 million globally on a $135 million budget. Despite initial mixed reactions, subsequent years have seen a growing appreciation for the film. As Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian noted, “It is operatic and grandiose – but gripping and exhilarating in a way no other film-maker could manage.”

However, Colin Farrell later expressed reservations about the film in an interview with Total Film:

  • “I didn’t like it so much – I thought it was style over substance and I accept a good bit of the responsibility,” he stated.
  • “It was never going to be Lethal Weapon, but I think we missed an opportunity to have a friendship that also had some elements of fun.”

Kosinski’s Impressive Filmography

Kosinski’s directorial debut came with 2010’s Tron: Legacy. He then directed the sci-fi adventure Oblivion and the firefighter drama Only the Brave. His blockbuster hit, Top Gun: Maverick, grossed $1.4 billion worldwide, solidifying his status as a top-tier director.

Upcoming Projects

Kosinski’s upcoming projects include:

  • F1 Action Drama

The release of his Brad Pitt-starring action drama, F1, is slated for this summer.

  • UFO Conspiracy Thriller

He is also attached to a UFO conspiracy thriller to be produced for Apple.
