Jarren Duran, the Boston Red Sox outfielder, has received considerable backing from teammates and others beyond baseball since he shared his past suicide attempt in a recent Netflix documentary. However, this openness has, unfortunately, also made him a target for hecklers.
Heckling Incident During Guardians Game
Duran reported that a spectator made an “inappropriate” remark to him near the Red Sox dugout during Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians. This occurred after Duran’s flyout in the seventh inning of the 13-3 victory.
Duran remained on the dugout’s top step, directing a stare at the fan as the inning progressed. As “God Bless America” played during the seventh-inning stretch, Red Sox personnel, including teammates and coaches, intervened to keep Duran away from the situation while umpires and Progressive Field security addressed the unruly fan.
The individual attempted to flee but was apprehended by security and ejected from the stadium.
“The fans just said something inappropriate. I’m just happy that the security handled it and the umpires were aware of it and they took care of it for me,” Duran stated.
Guardians Issue Apology
Following the game, the Guardians organization released a statement expressing remorse to the Red Sox and Duran. They confirmed the fan’s identification and pledged to collaborate with Major League Baseball to determine subsequent actions.
Fan Behavior and Mental Health
Duran noted that this was the first instance of a fan heckling him about his suicide attempt and mental health challenges since the release of “The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox” on Netflix on April 8.
“When you open yourself up like that, you also open yourself up to the enemies. But I have a good support staff around me, teammates, coaches. There were fans that were supporting me, so that was awesome,” he acknowledged.
Manager Cora Praises Restraint
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora, though positioned on the opposite side of the dugout, commended security for their handling of the ordeal.
Cora expressed even greater pride in Duran’s composure. Last season, Duran faced a two-game suspension for uttering a homophobic slur at a heckler who suggested he needed a tennis racket to improve his hitting at Fenway Park.
Learning from Past Mistakes
“There’s a two-way street. That’s something I said last year. We made a mistake last year and we learned from it. We grew up, you know, as an individual and as a group,” Cora reflected.
Duran’s Solid Performance
This incident somewhat overshadowed Duran’s strong performance in the game and throughout the series. He achieved a 4-for-6 performance with an RBI, marking the second occasion in his career with at least three hits in consecutive games.
