In a heartwarming turn of events, a miniature dachshund has been discovered alive and well after vanishing over 500 days ago. Valerie, the diminutive miniature dachshund, disappeared during a camping excursion on Kangaroo Island in South Australia back in November 2023, leaving her owners distraught. Now, after an extensive search, she has been reunited with her family.

Lost and Found: The Incredible Tale of Valerie the Dachshund

The petite pup, weighing approximately 4 kg, was last seen in a playpen while Georgia Gardner and her boyfriend, Joshua Fishlock, were fishing. Upon their return, Valerie had vanished. The task of locating Valerie seemed insurmountable, akin to finding a needle in a haystack, considering Kangaroo Island’s vast expanse of over 1,700 square miles and its 90-mile length.

Challenges on Kangaroo Island

The island’s challenging environment added to the worries. Kangaroo Island is home to:

  • Venomous snakes
  • Dingoes, large wild canines
  • Scorching heat
  • Limited shelter

Valerie would have needed to learn to fend for herself, finding sustenance and water to survive.

The Relentless Search for Valerie

Despite the odds, Valerie’s devoted owners and determined volunteers never relinquished their hope of finding her. After an astounding 529 days, their perseverance paid off.

Ingenious Rescue Strategy

Dedicated trackers from Kangala Wildlife Rescue worked tirelessly, eventually devising a clever technique to coax the lost dog back to safety.

Scent Trail Success

The rescuers utilized pieces of a T-shirt worn by Ms. Gardner, creating a scent trail that Valerie could trace. Kangala Wildlife Rescue shared their joy in a Facebook post:

  • “Kangala Wildlife Rescue is overjoyed to announce the successful rescue of Valerie, the miniature dachshund who went missing on Kangaroo Island 529 days ago.”
  • “We are absolutely thrilled and deeply relieved that Valerie is finally safe and able to begin her transition back to her loving parents, Josh and Georgia.”

The statement highlighted the immense effort involved:

  • Over 1,000 volunteer hours
  • More than 5,000 km traveled by volunteers
  • Deployment and monitoring of numerous cameras and traps
  • Use of sophisticated technology

This ensured Valerie’s safety and well-being throughout the rescue process.

Detailed Rescue Operation

The dachshund rescue operation included setting up a surveillance camera focused on a location with familiar items like clothing and toys. Eventually, a remote cage trap baited with food was introduced.

Testimonials from Kangala Wildlife Rescue

Kangala directors and rescue volunteers, Jared and Lisa, shared a video explaining the mission. Lisa mentioned that initial lack of sightings led to fears that Valerie had perished.

Describing the scent-based strategy, Lisa explained, “Right from the beginning, we would get parts of her mum Georgia’s T-Shirt for the scent trail…Georgia was able to wear the T-shirt for 12-hour shifts and games of netball and sent that to us.”

“We were able to rip little strips off it and started the process of adding more and more of those bits towards the trap site. We started off with Valerie’s scents, her toys, which were also sent to us.”

Lisa emphasized the importance of preserving a missing dog’s scent, saying it could be “really important” for bringing them home.

Valerie’s Global Recognition

Valerie’s story has resonated worldwide, with media outlets across the globe reporting on her dachshund rescue. This attention led the New York Post to playfully dub her “Australia’s favorite fugitive.”
