Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sign Defensive Tackle Desmond Watson
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have added a unique talent to their roster, securing former Florida defensive tackle Desmond Watson as an undrafted free agent. Standing at an imposing 6ft 6in and weighing in at 464lbs, Watson, known for his run-stopping capabilities and impressive size, is set to begin his NFL journey with his hometown team. The Desmond Watson signing brings local flavor and considerable bulk to the Buccaneers’ defensive line.
Hometown Hope
Watson, a Plant City native located approximately 20 miles east of Tampa, shared his exciting news via social media. His aspiration was to be chosen during the latter stages of the draft. Had he been selected, he would have made history as the heaviest player ever picked in the NFL Draft. However, teams were hesitant to take a chance until the Buccaneers picked him up following the draft
Buccaneers Take a Chance
The Buccaneers decided to take a chance, inking Watson to a deal post-draft. According to reports from The Athletic, the contract includes $50,000 guaranteed, featuring a $20,000 signing bonus.
Impressive Pro Day Performance
Last month, Watson impressed NFL scouts with a remarkable performance, achieving 36 reps of 225lbs on the bench press, surpassing all combine participants this year. He also recorded a 5.93-second 40-yard dash and a 25-inch vertical jump.
While he appeared fatigued during position drills, his sheer size and strength were undeniable strengths on what was arguably the most important day of his budding professional career.
Coach’s Perspective
“Dez, obviously, he’s a unicorn,” said Gators coach Billy Napier. “You’ll go the rest of your career and you’ll never be around a guy that’s that stature. And then you get to know Dez. He’s extremely intelligent. He’s got a great sense of humor. He was a great teammate. He’ll get his shot, and I’m hoping he’ll make the most of it.”
Weight Management Throughout College
Watson’s weight has been a topic of discussion since his arrival on campus in 2021. His weigh-in was just as attention-grabbing as his bench press performance. Last season, he was listed at 449lbs, an increase from 415lbs during his sophomore year. Former Florida coach Dan Mullen initially described him as “a 385lb athlete”.
On-Field Highlights and Durability
Despite concerns about potential injuries due to his size, Watson maintained a clean injury record during his four seasons in Gainesville.
- Some notable highlights include his dominant tackle against South Florida running back Brian Battie in 2022.
- Forcing a fumble by ripping the ball from South Carolina running back Jaheim Bell, which he then recovered later that year.
Collegiate Career Summary
Watson concluded his college career with 63 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He also had one rushing attempt for a one-yard gain and briefly played fullback against Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl in December. The Buccaneers are hopeful that his strength and unique physical traits will translate to success in the NFL, adding depth and power to their defensive line.
