For enthusiasts of the Hunger Games, anticipation is building as The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping makes its debut. Following the triumph of the Coriolanus Snow prequel, both in novel and film form with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, author Suzanne Collins and Lionsgate Motion Picture Group have revealed plans for a new movie adaptation.
Here’s a compilation of essential details about the upcoming Sunrise on the Reaping book and its cinematic adaptation.
Delving Into ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’
The latest installment in the series unfolds during the Second Quarter Quell, marking the 50th iteration of the Hunger Games. Taking place roughly 25 years before Katniss Everdeen’s introduction in the 74th Games, Sunrise on the Reaping explores the era preceding the Mockingjay’s impact on Panem.
“The Second Quarter Quell holds a revered status, significantly influencing the Games’ history, even into Katniss Everdeen’s time a quarter-century later,” stated Lionsgate’s Adam Fogelson, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “Like fans globally, we eagerly await this thrilling return to Panem.”

Speculation among fans had already pointed towards a possible prequel centered on Haymitch Abernathy, the mentor to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, and victor of the 50th Hunger Games.
The narrative centers on a 16-year-old Haymitch, residing in District Twelve with his family. His sudden selection as a tribute for the 50th Hunger Games unveils the origins of his harrowing past, which ultimately led to his struggles with alcoholism.

‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Cast Overview
The ensemble cast of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is headlined by Australian actor Joseph Zada, who will portray a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, marking his breakthrough role in Hollywood. He is joined by Gossip Girl and Hocus Pocus 2 actress Whitney Peak, who will play Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s girlfriend and fellow tribute from District 12. Furthermore, Mckenna Grace, recognized for her roles in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Gifted, is set to portray Maysilee Donner, another tribute from District 12 and an ally of Haymitch in the arena.
Given the timeline, it is unlikely that original cast members such as Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, and Elizabeth Banks will be reprising their roles, as the story takes place over two decades before their characters’ introductions.
Moreover, the cast of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, including Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, and Josh Andrés Rivera, are also not expected to feature in the forthcoming film.
