Russian Ambassador Attends Elbe River Anniversary Amid Controversy
Russia’s ambassador to Germany proceeded with his debated presence at events in Torgau, eastern Germany, on Friday, commemorating 80 years since US and Soviet troops famously linked up at the Elbe River on April 25, 1945. This “Elbe Day” celebration highlighted the historical handshake but was overshadowed by current geopolitical tensions.
Ambassador’s Remarks and Local Reaction
“Today, we must remember the fallen soldiers,” declared Sergey Nechayev in German at the gathering, surrounded by media and onlookers. “This day holds significant importance for us.”
His involvement had drawn criticism because of Moscow’s ongoing military conflict in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Call for Exclusion
Shortly before the event, Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksii Makeiev had requested that the Russian representative be prohibited from attending.
When questioned about the opposition to his attendance, Nechayev responded, “I don’t feel it; I feel comfortable.”
“We have the chance to communicate our stance,” the diplomat stated, regarding the denial of his opportunity to speak at the wreath-laying ceremony.
Saxony Premier’s Criticism
Michael Kretschmer, the Premier of Saxony, directly addressed the ambassador in Torgau, expressing strong disapproval of the war in Ukraine.
“Russia initiated a war against Ukraine, violating international law– not in [2022], but starting in 2014. Only Russia holds the power to end this war,” Kretschmer asserted towards Nechayev, whose presence was met with some jeers from the audience.
Symbolism and Controversy
Nechayev was observed interacting with attendees, with a St. George ribbon pinned to his coat. While traditionally a symbol commemorating the Soviet-German war, the ribbon has faced censure as a Russian propaganda tool since Russia’s initial military actions in Ukraine 11 years prior, building up to the large-scale incursion of February 2022.
