The 2025 NFL Draft was just beginning when one of the league’s newest general managers ignited the night with a significant deal. The Jacksonville Jaguars strategically moved up in the draft order to secure a coveted player.
Jaguars Trade Up to Draft Travis Hunter
The Jacksonville Jaguars traded up from the fifth slot to select Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter with the second overall pick.
Hunter’s Collegiate Career
Hunter is considered by many to be the draft’s premier athlete, a highly-regarded prospect from high school who flourished into a standout performer. He excelled as both a receiver and cornerback for Colorado under the guidance of coach Deion Sanders.
Browns Acquire Graham After Trade
With the fifth pick obtained from Jacksonville, the Cleveland Browns selected Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham.
Browns’ Quarterback Situation
Cleveland has a pressing need for a quarterback. Team owner Jimmy Haslam recently described the Browns’ acquisition of Deshaun Watson as a “big swing and miss.” The team’s pick of Graham and their initial trade suggest the Browns were not particularly impressed with the available quarterbacks in this year’s draft class.
Potential quarterback prospects for next year’s draft include Arch Manning of Texas and Penn State’s Drew Allar.
Gladstone’s Draft Philosophy
The trade to acquire Hunter brings to mind remarks made by new Jaguars general manager James Gladstone during his introductory press conference several months ago.
“We will prioritize people and players that are intangibly rich, and by doing so, they will elevate our ecosystem by being nothing more than themselves,” Gladstone, 34, said.
Hunter’s Dual-Threat Ability
Hunter is undoubtedly a multifaceted player. Last season, he recorded 96 receptions and 15 touchdowns, averaging 12.9 yards per catch. He provides the kind of explosive playmaking ability that could greatly benefit Jaguars quarterback and former No. 1 overall pick, Trevor Lawrence.
Defensive Performance
- Hunter recorded 36 tackles.
- He had four interceptions.
- He also defended 11 passes.
According to reports, the Jaguars intend to allow Hunter to play both on offense and defense in the NFL, fulfilling his stated desire.
