Chester County Family Seeks Help to Bring Veteran Home After Las Vegas Medical Emergency

A Chester County family is urgently seeking assistance to bring their father, a decorated Vietnam veteran, home after a medical emergency during what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation in Las Vegas. The unforeseen crisis has turned their lives upside down, and they are now facing significant financial challenges. The community is rallying around them, with a GoFundMe campaign established to help cover the mounting expenses, including the cost of a specialized medical flight needed to transport him home.

Vacation Turns Harrowing

  • What began as a week-long getaway to Las Vegas for a Chester County couple has now stretched into six weeks due to an unforeseen medical crisis.

  • The family is appealing for help to bring their father and stepmother back to Chester County, as the father requires a ventilator and a specialized medical flight for safe transport.

  • A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the family, raising thousands of dollars thus far.

Details of the Incident

Bill Peters, 77, and Cameron Peters, 52, own “Cameron Peters Floral Design” in Phoenixville. They temporarily shut down their business on March 10 for their first vacation in approximately ten years, planning to reopen on March 24.

Tragically, Bill contracted influenza during the trip, leading to respiratory failure. He has been hospitalized in Las Vegas since March 18. The family has confirmed he received a flu vaccine.

Family’s Plea for Assistance

“We are doing everything we can from 2,600 miles away,” stated Missy Yetter, Bill’s daughter. “I miss him and desperately want him home where we can all care for him. His grandkids miss him terribly. I truly believe that if we can get him home, we can collectively provide the best care for him, as the past month and a half has been incredibly difficult.”

John Peters, Bill’s son and a Douglass Township Police officer, added, “It’s incredibly challenging to handle everything remotely. Our father remains on a ventilator, which prevents him from taking a standard commercial flight home.”

Timeline of Events

Cameron has remained at Bill’s bedside throughout this ordeal. She shared via Zoom that Bill spent over 20 days in the ICU, intubated. Two weeks ago, he underwent a tracheotomy and had a feeding tube inserted. According to Cameron, he is now showing signs of alertness. However, his recovery is expected to be lengthy.

“It has been overwhelming, navigating through everything,” Cameron expressed. “He is no longer constantly sedated. He is alert, awake, and responsive, able to acknowledge questions with a nod or shake of his head.”

Financial Burden and Community Support

A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to alleviate the financial strain on the family, as the floral shop, their sole source of income, has been closed for over 40 days.

Cameron estimates their combined business and home expenses, including rent, utilities, and insurance, total approximately $7,000 per month.

These costs are compounded by the unexpected expenses associated with Cameron’s extended stay in Las Vegas and the need to secure a specialized medical flight for Bill’s return.

John emphasized, “Any donation, no matter the size, is greatly appreciated. We desperately want to bring him home and repay him for all he has contributed to his communities over the years.”

Bill Peters’ Contributions

Following his military service, Bill dedicated himself as a volunteer firefighter and EMT. He also served as the Director of Public Safety and EMS for Montgomery County.

Bill suffers from chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a condition linked to his exposure to Agent Orange during his service in the Vietnam War.

John recounted, “His unit was the inspiration for the movie ‘Platoon.’ He was shot twice, earning him two Purple Hearts. We need to bring him home to a supportive environment where we can provide better care and improve his overall well-being.”

Family’s Deep Affection

“He is the kindest man. He would do anything for anyone. He has always been there for me,” Yetter shared. “There is no better man than him; he is my dad.”

Cameron added, “The outpouring of love and support from acquaintances, customers, and even strangers has been incredible. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of those willing to donate, even those who do not know us personally.”

Hopes of a Swift Return

Doctors have cleared Bill for medical transport, the family said, and they are now focused on finding a suitable flight and securing the necessary funding.
