PAHO Seeks Collaboration to Combat Measles and Yellow Fever Vaccine Hesitancy
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) announced it is pursuing partnerships with neighboring nations to address vaccine hesitancy concerning yellow fever and measles within populations across sections of the Americas this year. This announcement coincided with warnings from U.S. researchers about a critical juncture in the resurgence of measles in the United States, a quarter-century after its declared elimination, stemming from multiple outbreaks.
Measles Outbreaks Raise Concerns
Contagious Nature of Measles
“Measles ranks among the world’s most communicable illnesses,” stated Jarbas Barbosa, PAHO Director. He added that nations have struggled to maintain the advised 95% coverage for the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine, which renders communities vulnerable to imported cases.
Importance of Vaccination Coverage
Health authorities emphasize that a 95% inoculation rate across the population is essential to ensure collective security for those ineligible for vaccination, including infants younger than six months.
Regional Measles Statistics
PAHO has detected localized measles outbreaks in six countries in the region, with 2,313 cases documented thus far this year, a significant escalation from the 215 cases reported during the corresponding period last year. Three fatalities are confirmed, with one additional death under investigation.

Measles Cases in the United States
Since the start of 2024, the U.S. has reported a dozen measles outbreaks and at least 800 cases, including 624 infections and two deaths in Texas, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Yellow Fever Cases on the Rise
Continental Statistics
Yellow fever cases have also surged this year on the continent, with 189 cases across four countries and 74 fatalities, as reported by PAHO.
Sanitary Emergency in Colombia
A week prior, the Colombian government declared a health emergency in response to the increase in cases, documenting 74 confirmed infections and 34 deaths.
Combating Vaccine Hesitancy
PAHO’s Strategy
“PAHO is collaborating with countries to counter vaccine hesitancy, reinforce routine immunization initiatives, and broaden vaccine access to effectively address these cases,” Barbosa stated.
Contributing Factors to Hesitancy
Vaccine misinformation has intensified hesitancy in recent years, notably in the United States, where unfounded claims linking vaccines to autism have gained ground. Such views have been promoted, contrary to scientific evidence.
