Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza Result in Casualties Amidst Ongoing Conflict
Reports from Palestinian media outlets indicate that dozens have been killed following a series of Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip. These strikes come amidst the ongoing conflict which was triggered by the initial Hamas-led attack on Israel.
Details of the Gaza Airstrikes
According to the WAFA news agency, at least 15 individuals lost their lives in Jabaliya, located in the northern part of the blockaded coastal area. This occurred when a building providing refuge to displaced people was struck.
WAFA also reported multiple other devastating strikes, including incidents within Gaza City. Citing medical sources, the agency reports that a total of 52 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since early morning.
Military Claims and Counterclaims
The Israeli military has stated that it targeted a command and control center in Jabaliya, which was allegedly utilized by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants.
- The military contends that this facility was used to devise and coordinate assaults on Israeli civilians.
- They also asserted that precautions were implemented to reduce harm to non-combatants.
Currently, independent verification of the claims made by both sides remains unattainable.
Context of the Gaza Conflict
The present conflict in Gaza was sparked by the Hamas-led incursion into Israel on October 7, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of over 250 hostages who were taken to Gaza.
Since that initial attack, available data indicates that more than 51,300 individuals have been killed in the Gaza Strip, as reported by the Hamas-controlled health authority.
Potential Expansion of Military Operations
IDF General’s Warning
On Thursday, Eyal Zamir, the Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), issued a warning regarding a potential escalation of military operations in Gaza.
He stated that such expansion would be considered if there is a lack of progress in securing the return of hostages held by Hamas.
Statements from the Ground
“If we do not see progress in the return of the hostages, we will expand our activities into a more intense and significant operation until we reach a decisive outcome,” Zamir said during his visit to troops stationed in Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip.
- Zamir also added that “Hamas is mistaken about our capabilities, our intentions, and our determination.”
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz recently echoed similar threats, suggesting that prolonged hostage retention by Hamas would lead to increasingly severe Israeli strikes.
Katz also posited the possibility of Israel establishing a permanent occupation of portions of the Gaza Strip.
According to Israeli authorities, 24 hostages are believed to still be alive within the Gaza Strip, while Hamas and its affiliates are purportedly holding the remains of 35 others.
