EPA Faces Criticism for Potential Cuts to Children’s Health Programs

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is under fire after informing employees specializing in children’s health that they may face termination or reassignment. These actions stem from the inclusion of environmental justice and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in their job descriptions, according to an agency spokesperson. The potential cuts raise concerns about the future of programs designed to protect vulnerable populations from environmental hazards.

Impact on Regional Children’s Health Coordinators

The EPA’s ten regional children’s health coordinators play a vital role in collaborating with schools and various institutions. Their primary focus is preventing and addressing exposure to environmental hazards among young individuals. These coordinators are among 455 agency employees who have been notified of potential job eliminations or reassignments through a reduction-in-force process.

Former EPA Official Condemns the Actions

“This is truly an unprecedented assault on the well-being of our children,” stated Jeanne Briskin, a former EPA employee with nearly four decades of service, including leading the Office of Children’s Health Protection. She emphasized the extensive knowledge that regional children’s health coordinators possess regarding pressing problems, for example, the impacts from wildfire smoke and the use of pesticides in schools. These professionals, including biologists, environmental engineers, and public health experts, develop resources and assist EPA regulators in understanding the effects of pollution on young bodies.

Vulnerability of Children to Environmental Hazards

Ms. Briskin highlighted the bipartisan support for protecting children’s environmental health until now. “It is a tragedy to imagine the loss of children’s health coordinators at EPA, who are instrumental in protecting public health and averting children’s exposure to hazardous substances,” she added.

Children are uniquely susceptible to harmful substances due to their developing bodies. The propensity among children to engage in specific behaviors, such as crawling and placing items in their mouths, elevates their susceptibility to chemicals or other harmful substances.

EPA Administrator’s Stance on Environmental Justice

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has targeted departments working with disadvantaged communities, aligning with directives to downsize the government. These directives involve discontinuing programs focused on marginalized communities.

Concerns over Disproportionate Impact on Vulnerable Communities

It is commonplace for disadvantaged and minority communities to be in close proximity to sources of pollution like highways, industrial sites and power plants. Research indicates that residents of these areas experience elevated rates of health problems, including heart disease and asthma.

Zeldin’s Perspective on Environmental Justice Funding

Zeldin has characterized concentrating resources on these communities, an effort commonly called environmental justice, as “forced discrimination.”

When questioned about the alleged discriminatory nature of assisting communities facing disproportionate pollution, Zeldin clarified that his opposition is limited to funding external groups.

“The issue is that, under the pretext of environmental justice, funds are allocated but not employed to remedy the environmental problem,” Zeldin explained. “Instead, resources are diverted to organizations that advocate for increased funding to address the same environmental issue.”

Broader Restructuring at the EPA

Zeldin has extended these restrictions to government funding targeted at vulnerable communities. The EPA has initiated the dismissal of 280 employees involved in diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Also, 175 employees will be assigned to different roles. These changes are coordinated with Zeldin’s plan to close the Agency’s Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights.

Timeline for Firings and Reassignments

The terminations and reassignments are scheduled to take effect on July 31.

“This constitutes the opening phase of an extensive initiative aimed at optimizing EPA’s position to accomplish its essential purpose of safeguarding human health and the environment,” stated Molly Vaseliou, an EPA spokeswoman.

Uncertainty Surrounding Reassignments

She clarified that employees whose positions are legally defined and essential to the agency’s mission, like those focused on children’s health, would be reassigned. However, union officials suggested that only three children’s health coordinators had received notices of reassignment, while other employees’ jobs would be eliminated.

Ellie Hagen, the legislative and political coordinator for the EPA union, pointed out that children’s health coordinators are facing penalty because they work with vulnerable communities, such as children.
