Premier League champions Manchester City are understood to be the favorites to secure the signature of England international Morgan Gibbs-White during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Nottingham Forest midfielder has garnered significant praise for his performances this season, playing a pivotal role as Nuno Espirito Santo’s team strives for an unexpected Champions League qualification.

City’s new director of football, Hugo Viana, is expected to oversee a reshaping of the squad in the following months, with central midfield identified as a crucial area for strengthening. This strategic move comes after the club opted against extending Kevin De Bruyne’s contract.

While Liverpool and Manchester United have also been linked with interest in Gibbs-White, sources indicate that Manchester City are currently in pole position to complete the transfer once the current season concludes.

Another key target for City is Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-rated Florian Wirtz, viewed as a dream acquisition to bolster their attacking options. However, the German international, who is yet to decide on his future, is also attracting attention from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Despite interest in Wirtz, his skillset differs from that of Gibbs-White, and City acknowledge the necessity for increased dynamism and energy in their midfield to remain competitive in next season’s title race.

Manchester City are considered the leading contenders to sign Morgan Gibbs-White this summer.

The Nottingham Forest midfielder has attracted considerable interest following an impressive season in the Premier League.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is another target for Manchester City, who are planning a midfield rebuild.

Gibbs-White maintains a close friendship with Manchester City star Phil Foden, having been named godfather to Foden’s first child, Ronnie.

The former Wolves academy graduate initially joined Nottingham Forest in a £25 million transfer three years ago. He is currently contracted to the City Ground club until the end of the 2026-27 season.

Gibbs-White’s standout performances under manager Espirito Santo led to his England debut, awarded by interim manager Lee Carsley last September.

His impressive displays for Carsley’s Under-21s, a key figure in their European Championship triumph in 2023, caught the eye of senior FA officials.

However, new national team head coach Thomas Tuchel initially did not select the 25-year-old for last month’s World Cup qualifiers, a decision discussed frankly between the pair.

Tuchel eventually included Gibbs-White in the squad and is reportedly monitoring his progress closely ahead of a qualifier and friendly scheduled for early June, prior to Manchester City’s participation in the Club World Cup.
