O’Sullivan Set to Compete in World Snooker Championship Despite Earlier Doubts
Seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan is expected to participate in the upcoming World Snooker Championship in Sheffield, despite previous statements casting doubt over his involvement. The snooker icon had earlier suggested he would only decide on his participation closer to the tournament’s commencement and following the draw, which paired him against Ali Carter in the first round at the Crucible Theatre.
Initial Uncertainty Surrounding Participation
Earlier in April, O’Sullivan indicated he would make a final determination regarding his participation on or shortly after April 17th, the day of the draw.
“I’m undecided,” the celebrated snooker player stated when questioned about his plans to compete. “I’ve not yet reached a conclusion, and will likely decide around the 17th or 18th of April. As I’m currently unsure when my initial match is scheduled, I intend to allow myself the maximum possible time to make an informed decision.”
He added, “The aspiration is certainly there to compete and perform at the Crucible. I would welcome the opportunity to confidently play snooker. I simply require additional time to assess my current state and ascertain my readiness to participate.”
Reported Commitment to Championship Appearance
However, a report in the Daily Mail suggests that O’Sullivan will not withdraw from the prestigious World Championship event. He is reportedly intending to compete against his rival Ali Carter in their highly anticipated opening round clash at the Steel City venue.
Champions Dinner Absence and Sheffield Travel Plans
Adding to speculation, O’Sullivan was notably absent from Thursday evening’s Champions Dinner, a Masters-style event honouring past World Championship winners. Kyren Wilson, Stephen Hendry, and Steve Davis were among the twelve former champions expected to be in attendance.
Despite missing the dinner, O’Sullivan is anticipated to travel to Sheffield on Thursday to participate in the Green Carpet ceremony and the pre-tournament media day, traditionally held ahead of the championship.
Signals of Intent Ahead of Carter Match
These pre-tournament engagements are customary warm-up activities for snooker’s premier event and are viewed as indicators of O’Sullivan’s intent to compete. His match against Carter is scheduled to commence on Tuesday and conclude on Wednesday.
Historical Context and Potential Record
Notably, O’Sullivan famously won the World Championship in 2013 after taking a hiatus for the entire preceding season. At 49 years of age and facing a particularly strong field of competitors at this year’s Crucible, securing an unprecedented eighth world title would be widely regarded as his most significant career achievement.
