Major Apple service available on Android for the first time, but there’s a catch

Importance Score: 25 / 100 🔵

Apple Maps Extends Reach to Android via Web Browser

For users reliant on smartphone navigation, Google Maps is often the go-to application. This widely used service is a staple for both iPhone and Android users globally, offering efficient route guidance for driving, walking, cycling, and utilizing public transit. However, Apple Maps, previously exclusive to iOS devices, is now accessible to Android users through a web browser interface, expanding its availability beyond the iPhone ecosystem.

Web-Based Access Unlocks Apple Maps for Android

As initially reported by Android Police, Apple Maps has broadened its accessibility to Android phones. This expansion is facilitated through an update to the web version of the service.

According to 9to5Mac, the web rendition of Apple Maps is available for mobile devices, including iPhones and iPads, via maps.apple.com. Desktop users can also access the web version at the same address.

Android users can now experience Apple Maps by visiting the aforementioned web address in their mobile browser. Testing on a Google Pixel 9a using Chrome confirmed immediate loading and functionality without requiring a login. Location access permission is needed for utilizing directions.

Browser-Based Experience: Functionality and Limitations

While Android users seeking an Apple Maps app may still encounter some disappointment, the web-based access provides a functional alternative. Currently, Apple Maps is not available as a native application in the Google Play Store.

Despite this, adding a Chrome shortcut to the home screen offers a convenient way to access the service.

Feature Comparison and Beta Status

Although personal preference might still lean towards Apple Maps on iOS, particularly for features like detailed 3D building representations useful in urban navigation like London, certain functionalities are absent in the web version.

The intuitive two-finger drag for transitioning to a 3D view, common on iPhones, is not supported in the Android web iteration.

Notably, the web version of Apple Maps, irrespective of the access platform, is still designated as a beta, indicating ongoing testing and potential performance variations.

Future App Possibilities

While a dedicated Apple Maps app for Android in the Play Store remains uncertain, Apple’s precedent with apps like Apple TV, Apple Music, and Apple Music Classical on Android suggests future possibilities. This approach contrasts with Apple’s consistent stance against providing Android users access to services like iMessage, leaving open the question of further integration of Apple services on the Android platform.
