Minecraft Movie’s Theatrical Run Marked by Viral Audience Trend and Director’s Response

The recently released Minecraft Movie has achieved significant box office success; however, its screenings have also become associated with a viral trend of audience members, particularly younger viewers, audibly expressing their enthusiasm. This has led to reports of disturbances and even police intervention at some cinemas. Despite the ensuing commotion, the film’s director, Jared Hess, has publicly defended the exuberant reactions from moviegoers.

Viral Trend of Loud Reactions Sparks Debate

Based on the widely popular open-world survival game, the Minecraft Movie starring Jack Black, premiered on April 4th and has grossed over $300 million. While the majority of audiences have engaged with the film in a conventional manner, a notable segment has adopted a more demonstrative approach. Originating from memes highlighting specific scenes, notably one featuring the phrase “chicken jockey,” videos documenting audience members screaming, jumping, and throwing popcorn have proliferated online. In one instance, a moviegoer reportedly brought a live chicken into a theater during the aforementioned scene.

Despite some viewing this behavior as disruptive, director Jared Hess has characterized it as amusing and positive.

Director Jared Hess Embraces Audience Enthusiasm

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly conducted prior to the live chicken incident, Hess conveyed his enjoyment of the viral videos capturing boisterous audience reactions during screenings.

“It’s been so wild. It’s been incredibly fun,” Hess told EW. “People are sending me these genuinely hilarious pre-movie speeches from teenagers. It’s unbelievably funny. I’m staying up late watching them.”

Director Reacts to Police Involvement

Addressing reports of police being called to theaters, Hess found it “odd” that law enforcement was involved due to what he perceived as moviegoers “having too much fun.”

“It’s amusing because it seems to be primarily about cheering and throwing popcorn, which strikes me as funny that police are being summoned for popcorn,” Hess stated. “Yes, it’s hilarious. I’ve seen numerous funny videos. It’s fantastic, especially when people are climbing on shoulders and standing and cheering during those moments. There’s a palpable anticipation. Ultimately, I’m just pleased that people are creating memories with their friends and families.”

Director Downplays Disruptive Behavior

In a separate interview with The New York Times, Hess minimized concerns about popcorn throwing, stating, “No one’s going to be harmed” by it. He added, “Look, when I attend movies with my children, it resembles a popcorn massacre, even when they aren’t intentionally throwing it, it still ends up on the floor regardless.”

Hess further emphasized the positive aspects of communal moviegoing experiences. “I am genuinely delighted that people are rediscovering the joy of returning to cinemas and experiencing films collectively, as a group,” Hess said. “We have become increasingly isolated by our personal devices, and it’s enjoyable to experience things together as human beings. I believe people are yearning for that shared experience. So, it’s gratifying that they’ve found it in this lighthearted film we’ve created.”

Concerns Regarding Theater Staff and Audience Etiquette

While the director embraces the enthusiastic ambiance, some observe a potential downside. A point of contention is the added burden on cinema employees tasked with cleaning up the aftermath of these exuberant screenings between showings, potentially impacting overworked and underpaid staff.

Call for Respectful Enjoyment

A more considerate approach to moviegoing is suggested. While spirited reactions are welcome, it is proposed that audience members should be mindful of cleanliness and avoid creating excessive messes. Basic courtesy, such as refraining from throwing food and ensuring personal cleanup, is encouraged. Furthermore, bringing live animals, such as chickens, into movie theaters is deemed inappropriate.
