China has commenced construction on what is anticipated to become the world’s longest underwater motorway tunnel, situated beneath the expansive Yangtze River. This significant infrastructure undertaking will employ a domestically engineered, colossal tunnel boring machine (TBM), christened Jianghai, according to reports from Xinhua News Agency. The extensive subaquatic passage will form a vital transportation artery across the river, connecting the municipalities of Haimen in Nantong and Taicang in Suzhou, spanning approximately 24.3 miles, including a 6.96-mile submerged segment beneath the Yangtze River. The Jianghai TBM, a formidable piece of machinery boasting a 16.6-meter diameter and weighing a substantial 5,000 tonnes, will be instrumental in excavating the Haitai Yangtze River Tunnel.
