Postecoglou Addresses Internal Leak Hampering Tottenham Preparations

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has revealed his efforts to identify and stop an internal source who is divulging sensitive injury and team updates, actions he believes are hindering his squad’s match readiness. The exasperated coach clarified that the individual responsible for leaking information is not a player or agent, choosing to publicly address the issue in hopes of prompt cessation of the detrimental disclosures.

Manager Concerned About Club Culture Amidst Information Breach

Postecoglou, facing scrutiny following a less than satisfactory season, recently discussed the difficulties in establishing a robust winning culture at Spurs. He has questioned the lack of broader club representation in public discourse, noting the absence of strong voices beyond his own in defending the club’s position. This latest incident, dubbed ‘Mole-gate’, according to Postecoglou, has been an ongoing concern since the previous season.

Leakage Issue Surfaced During Fitness Questioning

The topic arose when Postecoglou was questioned regarding Wilson Odobert’s fitness status. Coincidentally, around the same time, Tottenham announced the appointment of former Arsenal chief executive Vinai Venkatesham. Venkatesham is set to assume his new role in the summer, holding the same title he previously held at Arsenal, a move that may impact Scott Munn, Spurs’ current chief football officer.

Specific Team Details Compromised Before Matches

Reports circulated widely the previous Thursday indicating Odobert suffered a hamstring injury. Subsequently, the winger was an unused substitute in the 1-1 home draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-final first leg.

Impact on Team Selection and Opposition Awareness

“There is no question we have an information leak within the club – someone consistently sharing confidential details,” Postecoglou stated during preparations for Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Wolves. “This situation complicates our task, as we aim to prevent opposing teams from gaining advance knowledge of team selections.”

“We have narrowed down potential sources. This has been under investigation for a considerable period, and we have a strong indication of the origin. It’s disheartening because one expects everyone within our organization to be unified and supportive, not undermining our efforts.”

Agents and Players Excluded as Potential Sources

When questioned about player agents potentially being the conduit of leaks to journalists via disgruntled players, Postecoglou dismissed this. “It’s not agents, definitely not agents,” Postecoglou asserted. “The nature of the leaked information is very specific, and the language used is not typical of agents, I assure you.”

“It is certainly not the players. The information disseminated… particularly regarding medical details, I am extremely cautious with. While there’s a perception of open information flow, I maintain a respectful approach to medical records and the extent of information disclosed.”

“The fact that these details are being leaked is unacceptable from the club’s standpoint. I already face numerous challenges without adding internal issues.”

Culture Change Imperative for Success

Postecoglou affirmed the paramount importance of culture within any organization. “Absolutely,” he confirmed. “That’s the element we are persistently striving to reshape, to guide the club towards a position of robust mentality and defined identity. It’s about safeguarding that identity and ensuring a professional approach permeates every facet of the club.”

Employing ‘Detective Work’ to Uncover Source

Postecoglou mentioned “varied methods” for identifying a mole, referencing the Coleen Rooney ‘Wagatha Christie’ case. “You simply trace the information’s path, and the source becomes quite apparent,” he explained. “There’s always an element of investigative work in football management. This is fundamentally a cultural issue. I strongly believe successful organizations do not operate in this manner.”

Reacher Analogy for Problem Solving

When asked about his preferred fictional detective, Postecoglou humorously replied, “Reacher. Just get out the big bat and pummel people!”

Focus on Europa League and Future Planning

Postecoglou stressed the significance of success in the Europa League, particularly to compensate for domestic underperformance and bolster his position at the club. Regarding Son Heung-min’s contract, expiring in June 2026, he quipped, “At season’s end, we will conduct a review of our squad and engage in forward-planning – if I am still here, of course.”

Scott Munn’s Position in Restructure

Scott Munn is also likely experiencing pressure. Appointed in April 2023, Munn commenced his Spurs role in September of that year following a delayed departure from his previous position as chief executive of the City Football Group China. Postecoglou’s appointment followed in June 2023.

Munn was tasked with overseeing all football operations, including the medical department, which has faced considerable scrutiny amid a season marked by numerous injuries. Venkatesham’s remit will reportedly encompass all operational aspects both on and off the field. The 44-year-old, who concluded a 14-year tenure at Arsenal last season with a background primarily in commercial roles, previously served on the board and executive committee of the European Club Association.
