Public Asked to Name Adorable Otter Pups at Long Island Aquarium

A heartwarming appeal has been launched by the Long Island Aquarium, inviting the public to participate in naming their newest residents: a litter of exceptionally cute North American river otter siblings. Born at the aquarium, these pups, consisting of two males and two females, are part of a special naming initiative with a touching backstory.

Honoring Otter Grandparents with Food-Themed Names

According to spokesperson Darlene Puntillo, the female pups will be given fruit-inspired names – Cherry, Fig, Kiwi, or Peach – as a tribute to their grandmother, Jelly. Jelly, a beloved otter who resided at the Aquarium since 2008, passed away from cancer several years prior. For the male pups, the choices are nut-themed: Cashew, Pecan, Pistachio, or Walnut. These names will honor the pups’ grandfather, Peanut Butter.

Born to Flo and Stark

The quartet of otter pups arrived in February, offspring of Flo, a much-loved female otter, and her mate, Stark. The aquarium has characterized Flo and Stark as an energetic and playful pair. Now growing and becoming more independent, the pups are ready for the public to help choose their names through an online poll hosted on the marine center’s website.

Voting Open Until Mother’s Day

Nearly 4,000 individuals have already participated in the animal naming contest. “Guests are welcome to vote as frequently as they wish, and the selected names will be revealed on Mother’s Day,” Puntillo stated.

Visit the Otter Pups at “Otter Falls”

As the aquarium commemorates its 25th anniversary, visitors can observe Flo and her offspring at the expansive 1,500 square foot “Otter Falls” exhibit. This exhibit, which features a striking nine-foot waterfall, will be available for viewing until the fall of 2026.

About North American River Otters

Habitat and Appearance

North American river otters typically attain weights of up to 35 pounds and can measure as long as five feet. Their lifespan generally ranges from 10 to 20 years in suitable environments.

Introduction to Father Otter, Stark

Stark, born in 2013, has not yet been introduced to his offspring due to safety precautions while the pups are developing their walking and swimming abilities. “Once the pups demonstrate safe swimming skills, we can commence introductions with Stark,” Puntillo explained.
