ASHEBORO, N.C. – Eshika Taya, a junior at Asheboro High School, demonstrates a profound appreciation for education, driving her to organize a unique fundraising initiative. Inspired by her visits to North India, which she considers her second home, Taya witnessed firsthand the challenges of poverty and sought to make a tangible difference. Recognizing the educational disparities faced by some communities, this Asheboro student combined her passion for service with her school involvement to launch a dessert sale benefiting благотворительность.

Student’s Dessert Fundraiser Supports Education Charity

Driven by observations of poverty both in North India and closer to home, Eshika Taya, a dedicated student at Asheboro High School, felt compelled to act.

“Seeing many underprivileged children and families in my community, particularly where I have roots, was difficult to witness,” she stated.

Combining School Clubs for Community Impact

Not content with simply acknowledging the issue, Taya aimed to take action. She decided to leverage her involvement in school clubs, specifically DECA and the mental health club she established, as platforms for enacting change.

“I realized I could collaborate with both DECA and the mental health organization to develop a project that would generate funds for a charitable cause,” Taya explained.

Sweet Treats for a Worthy Cause

Taya’s fundraising idea centered around selling traditional Indian desserts. She undertook the baking herself, with assistance from two classmates who helped with packaging.

“We chose India’s most well-known desserts,” she noted.

“One, Jalebi, is considered the national dessert and is similar to funnel cake. The other, Gulab Jamun, is a type of donut soaked in rose syrup. We decided to sell both and donate all proceeds to a chosen organization.”

Benefiting the Akshaya Patra Foundation

Taya selected the Akshaya Patra Foundation as the beneficiary of her fundraising efforts.

She explained, “Their primary mission is to prepare and distribute hot meals in their operational areas, including locations near my family’s home.”

Fundraising Success and Community Engagement

By selling these delectable treats to homes and businesses within the Asheboro community, Taya and her helpers successfully raised approximately $1,020.

Beyond the financial achievement, Taya valued the opportunity to raise awareness.

“While going door-to-door and reaching out to friends, we also had conversations about the issue we were addressing,” she said.

“We distributed flyers downtown and at school, and through social media, many friends were eager to support the cause. They felt a sense of pride in supporting a classmate, enjoying a treat, and contributing to a meaningful purpose.”
