Excitement is building that the United Kingdom could soon be home to a major new theme park resort, potentially the largest of its kind in Europe. Anticipation is mounting as reports suggest a long-awaited agreement for a Universal Studios theme park in the UK is nearing completion and could be announced as early as this week.
Project Nectarine: Bedford Identified as Likely Location
Universal Studios, the entertainment giant renowned for its immersive movie-themed attractions, first opened its doors in Hollywood in 1954. Since then, it has expanded its global presence with parks in Orlando, Japan, China, and Singapore. Now, a sixth Universal Studios park appears to be in development, with Bedford in the UK emerging as the unexpected frontrunner location.
Comcast Corp, the parent company of Universal, acquired a substantial 476-acre plot of land on the site of a former brick factory, situated south of Bedford, in December 2023. Furthermore, in February, reports surfaced that Universal Studios had applied to trademark its brand name in the UK, coinciding with ongoing discussions between Comcast and the UK Treasury, reportedly codenamed ‘Project Nectarine’.

Page Thompson, President of New Ventures at Universal Destinations & Experiences, emphasized the significant potential benefits of the project in summer 2024. He stated publicly that “A world-class theme park and resort from Universal has the capacity to generate billions in economic advantages for the UK, by fostering thousands of high-quality employment opportunities and drawing millions of additional visitors to the nation.”
Social Media Fuels Speculation of Imminent Announcement
As anticipation intensifies, a dedicated TikTok account, Universally Bedford, has become a focal point for speculation, making a strong declaration that has further amplified excitement among theme park enthusiasts. In a recent video, the account asserted: “This message is for all the doubters who said it would never happen. It is happening, take our word for it. This week, it is highly probable that we will receive the approval we have been awaiting for over a year.”
Economic Factors Influence Government Decision
The Universally Bedford account highlighted background economic developments, citing information from the Financial Times. They suggested that recent global stock market volatility has “prompted the government to act to stimulate the UK economy”.
According to Universally Bedford, the rationale is: “What measures can be implemented to inject vitality into the UK economy? The answer, naturally, is a £50 billion net economic boost over two decades in the shape of a brand new theme park and resort near Bedford.”
Indeed, analyses by Universal Destinations & Experiences project that the development could deliver an impressive £50 billion in economic value to the UK and create up to 20,000 jobs. In response to the TikTok update, online commentators have expressed eagerness, with one user stating: “I genuinely cannot wait for construction to commence.”
Enthusiasm Growing Among Potential Visitors
Another individual exclaimed: “This is unbelievably thrilling!” Another playfully remarked: “I will absolutely relocate to Bedford when it is constructed!” A further user declared their intention to purchase an annual pass, stating: “I’m getting an annual pass!”
Adding to the online buzz, a fifth TikTok user commented: “I constantly check your channel and search online for updates. Fingers crossed!”
Government Remains Cautious
Conversely, government sources have indicated that discussions are “ongoing and nothing is yet finalized.” Despite this official caution, Universally Bedford maintains its projection that the park and resort are on track to welcome visitors in 2031.
