Microsoft has created an AI-generated version of Quake

Importance Score: 45 / 100 🔵

Microsoft is advancing into the Xbox AI gaming sphere, having previously introduced its Muse AI model, an innovative system designed to generate gameplay. Initially considered a research endeavor, the tech giant is now enabling Copilot users to explore Muse through an AI-generated demonstration of the iconic game Quake II. This preview highlights Microsoft’s push into AI in gaming and the capabilities of Muse for future game development.

Copilot for Gaming Showcases AI-Generated Quake II

This tech demo is a key component of Microsoft’s Copilot for Gaming initiative, showcasing an AI-generated recreation of Quake II playable directly in a web browser. The current Quake II level is rudimentary, featuring basic environments, indistinct enemies, and limited interactions. Furthermore, access to this tech demo is time-constrained by Microsoft.

Improved Performance, Limited Experience

Initial demonstrations of the Muse AI model ran at 10fps with a 300×180 resolution. This new demo exhibits improved performance, operating at a playable frame rate with a slightly enhanced 640×360 resolution. However, it remains a limited experience, primarily indicating the future possibilities of AI in gaming applications.

Muse as a Game Development Tool and for Game Preservation

Microsoft is emphasizing Muse as an AI model designed to assist game developers in the prototyping phase. Upon unveiling Muse in February, the company also disclosed its exploration of how this AI could revitalize classic games like Quake II, adapting them for modern gaming platforms and hardware.

Phil Spencer on the Future of AI and Gaming

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer stated in February, “Imagine a future where AI models learn from gameplay data and video to understand classic games, making them adaptable to run on any platform. Game preservation is a key focus for us, and the capacity of these models to fully comprehend game mechanics, independent of original engines and hardware, creates vast possibilities.”

Expanding Muse Training and Copilot’s Gaming Role

Microsoft is evidently broadening Muse’s training dataset beyond Bleeding Edge, suggesting the imminent arrival of further interactive AI game experiences in Copilot Labs. Additionally, Microsoft is developing Copilot into an in-game coaching tool. This feature will enable the AI assistant to analyze gameplay and provide tips and guidance to players. Select aspects of this functionality will soon be available to Windows Insiders via Copilot Vision.
