Spurs Manager Postecoglou’s Gesture Towards Fans Sparks Debate After Chelsea Defeat
Tottenham Hotspur fans have expressed their discontent following recently surfaced footage depicting manager Ange Postecoglou seemingly cupping his ear in the direction of travelling supporters during Thursday’s 1-0 loss against Chelsea. The incident has ignited discussion among fans and pundits alike, raising questions about the manager’s relationship with the Tottenham faithful amidst a challenging period for the club.
Controversial Moment at Stamford Bridge
The North London side conceded a goal early in the second half, with Enzo Fernandez converting a header from Cole Palmer’s delivery. Tensions in the away section appeared to escalate when Postecoglou made a double substitution shortly after the hour mark, introducing Pape Matar Sarr and Brennan Johnson in place of Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert.
Supporters could be heard voicing their disapproval with chants of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’. However, just five minutes later, Sarr appeared to have scored a long-range goal, seemingly offering a swift riposte to the criticism.

Postecoglou’s Reaction and Disallowed Goal
As the ball found the net, Postecoglou was observed turning towards the away fans and cupping his ear. This gesture, however, was followed by disappointment as the apparent equalizer was subsequently ruled out due to a foul in the build-up play.
Manager Defends Actions
In post-match comments, Postecoglou addressed the incident, defending his actions by stating he was encouraging the supporters to increase their volume and cheer, acknowledging the team’s current struggles. He suggested the gesture was intended to be positive encouragement during a frustrating season for Tottenham.
New Footage Emerges
However, newly circulated, previously unseen footage has emerged online, offering a different perspective. This clip shows Postecoglou cupping his ear and then waving towards the supporters, seemingly seeking their attention to ensure his gesture was noticed. This additional footage has further fueled the debate surrounding his behaviour.

Postecoglou’s Explanation and Maddison’s View
In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Postecoglou had attempted to clarify his gesture, stating, ‘I wanted them (the fans) to be happy, mate. We’d just scored a cracking goal. So I wanted them to cheer – because they haven’t had a lot to cheer about.’
He further added, addressing the booing of substitutions: ‘It’s not the first time my substitutions have been booed. If you followed my tenure, it’s not the first time. They’re allowed to boo. But I wanted them to cheer – because I thought it was a cracking goal.’
Spurs midfielder James Maddison, in a separate Sky Sports interview, acknowledged the fans’ right to be upset, recognizing their frustration after the team’s 16th league defeat, which places Tottenham in 14th position.
‘It hurts a lot. It’s been one too many times this season. Our fans are rightly disappointed. We’re disappointed,’ Maddison admitted.
He continued, ‘We’re just trying hard to search for the answers of why, in the league, we’re not getting the results in the tight games. We’ve lost so many games this year by one-goal margins.’
Sky’s original footage on Thursday had shown an angle from behind Postecoglou of him cupping his ear
Postecoglou had claimed he was just trying to get the fans to cheer louder
Postecoglou has been branded a ‘disgrace’ for his actions towards the fans
The Australian manager has also been accused of showing his ‘arrogance’
One fan claimed they were no longer buying his excuses following the newly-released footage
Maddison concluded by saying, ‘So, I don’t really want to be out here talking out of nowhere. Our fans don’t even want to hear what we’ve got to say, do they? So, it’s about just trying to be better going forward.’
‘To be fair, they’re rightly angry. I think it’s still important that we go over and show our appreciation for them, even though we’re not getting a nice reception, let’s put it that way.’
‘So that’s why I still walk over there. I think they deserve that, even though it’s not easy to go over and get pelted right in your face. But, like I said, they pay their money, they travel all over for us. And we’re just as disappointed as they are, but we’re trying to put it right.’
