David Tennant’s Top Film Picks: A Glimpse into the Actor’s Cinematic Tastes
Celebrated actor David Tennant, known for his extensive career spanning film and television since his early start at 16, has captivated audiences for years. The esteemed 53-year-old performer is recognized for roles in prominent productions such as Harry Potter, Broadchurch, Good Omens, and Doctor Who. While familiar to many through these popular roles, the question remains: what films does this acclaimed Scottish actor personally enjoy? In a recent conversation with Letterboxd, David Tennant unveiled his top four films, offering insights into his cinematic preferences.
Tennant’s Cinematic Classics
Opening the discussion, Tennant lauded the courtroom drama 12 Angry Men, emphasizing the compelling performances within the film. He stated, “12 Angry Men, the performances are extraordinary. It’s essentially a play, very contained. The narrative twists and turns, with pivotal events occurring off-screen, contribute to its brilliance in storytelling and filmmaking. Although, it does reflect a certain era in its representation, being predominantly white and male, which feels somewhat dated in contemporary terms, but that is inherent to the story it tells.”
Another cinematic treasure on Tennant’s list is the beloved holiday classic It’s a Wonderful Life, alongside the space opera blockbuster Star Wars. He further elaborated, “I should also include something by Alfred Hitchcock, possibly Psycho, although arguably, the initial segment of Psycho is the most captivating part, isn’t it?”
Marnie and Festive Film Education
Ultimately, Tennant revised his Hitchcock selection, settling instead on the 1960s crime thriller, Marnie. The actor shared nostalgic memories of watching these classic movies during the Christmas season in his youth.
Tennant reminisced, “The BBC traditionally aired a selection of classic films late at night during the Christmas holidays.
“I would eagerly stay up late each night to watch these films, essentially gaining a film education over those two weeks of the Christmas break.”
Neutral Stance at BAFTAs
However, in the context of an interview conducted prior to his hosting duties at the 2024 BAFTAs, Tennant acknowledged the need for impartiality, suggesting he should refrain from expressing personal favorites or preferences.
David Tennant in “Rivals”
In more recent projects, audiences have witnessed David Tennant portraying the character Tony Baddingham in the Disney+ series Rivals. This eight-part series, set in the 1980s, is adapted from Jilly Cooper’s novel of the same title.
“Rivals” Season 2 Confirmed
The series explores the enduring conflict between Tennant’s character, Tony, and Rupert Campbell-Black, played by Alex Hassell. A second season of Rivals was officially announced at the close of the previous year.
Dame Jilly Cooper, Executive Producer and author of Rivals, commented, “Nearly four decades after the publication of my novel Rivals, I have been thrilled to witness the world’s embrace of my cherished characters – Rutshire’s Finest. Collaborating with Happy Prince and Disney+ on the first season has been a dream realized.”
“I am overwhelmingly excited and eagerly anticipate the return of my superhero Rupert Campbell-Black and the rest of the characters in season two!”
Rivals is available for streaming on Disney+
