From College to the Pros

Time with the Carolina Panthers
While he also played for the Seattle Seahawks, Wells is notably remembered for his time with the Carolina Panthers, endearing himself to fans and colleagues alike.
Battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Diagnosis and Initial Treatment
In early 2023, Wells received a diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow characterized by the rapid production of immature blood cells. He immediately began chemotherapy treatment to combat the aggressive disease.
Remission and Recurrence
Following the initial rounds of chemotherapy, Wells experienced a period of remission. However, in the fall of the same year, he received the devastating news that the cancer had returned, necessitating further treatment.
Facing Adversity with Strength and Positivity
“Show me who to tackle”
In an interview with KSR in April 2024, Wells openly discussed his fight against cancer, reflecting his characteristic determination. “Show me who to tackle and I can do that,” Wells stated, emphasizing his reliance on medical professionals and faith during this challenging time. “This is in the doctors’ hands and it’s in God’s hands.”
Support System and Mental Fortitude
Wells also spoke about the immense support he received from teammates and others, which bolstered his positive outlook. He highlighted the encouragement from fellow players who recognized his inherent toughness, saying, “‘You’re one of the toughest guys I’ve ever met. I know you’ll beat this.’”
He acknowledged the crucial role of mental strength in his battle, stating, “There’s mental toughness that comes into it. You have to have a positive attitude that you can beat it. I’ve done everything that I can with that.” He also candidly admitted the limitations of personal control in such situations, noting, “It’s like the chemo either works or it doesn’t. You just don’t have a lot of control over it. You wish you had more control.”
Inspiration from Family and Legacy of Awareness
A Positive Outlook
Wells credited his positive approach to life to his mother’s influence, explaining, “Generally speaking, my mother was a very positive person and I think she kind of rubbed off on me in that regard.” Despite acknowledging the fear associated with his prognosis, he maintained a focus on finding joy and positivity each day. “Not that I’m not scared and everything else you would expect with the possibility of dying, but you still gotta find a way to enjoy every day and stay positive.”
Cancer Awareness Advocacy
According to the Carolina Panthers, Wells dedicated a significant portion of his last year to raising awareness regarding cancer support. He actively encouraged individuals to contribute to the fight against cancer through blood donations, financial support for cancer research initiatives, and participation in the bone marrow registry.
