Importance Score: 65 / 100 🔴

AI video technology is rapidly advancing, and Adobe is officially launching its acclaimed AI editing tool from beta. Generative Extend, powered by Firefly AI, is now fully integrated into Premiere Pro, leading a suite of newly released features.

Adobe Premiere Pro Enhances Video Editing with AI-Powered Generative Extend and More

Ashley Still, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Digital Media at Adobe, stated in an exclusive email to FASTNET, “Generative Extend marks the debut of Firefly-powered capabilities within Premiere Pro, delivering an unprecedented tool for editors to seamlessly expand video and audio frames. This innovation allows for achieving impeccably timed edits and represents just the inception of how Firefly in Premiere Pro will revolutionize video production with Adobe’s signature precision and robust performance.”

Adobe’s latest release incorporates both AI-driven tools and features that leverage artificial intelligence to generate content. The current announcement highlights both categories. Generative Extend, specifically, is an AI creation tool designed to produce additional seconds of footage, effectively lengthening existing clips. This is particularly useful when supplementary time is needed within a scene. Editors can now utilize Premiere Pro to render these extensions in 4K resolution and for vertical video formats, thanks to the enhanced Generative Extend capabilities.

Furthermore, the non-generative AI features graduating from beta are designed to streamline navigation within Premiere Pro and refine content directly within the application. Adobe also introduces two AI-enhanced tools from beta: Media Intelligence, an intelligent search panel, and an AI-powered caption translation tool.

Adobe’s commitment to artificial intelligence is well-established. The company launched Firefly AI video generator in February, capable of creating short videos entirely through generative AI. Additionally, Photoshop has received numerous AI updates, including its AI image generation capabilities.

Key AI Upgrades in Premiere Pro

Here’s a detailed look at the latest AI enhancements in Premiere Pro. For a broader view, explore the array of major AI video models currently available and upcoming.

Generative Extend Now Supports 4K and Vertical Video

Generative Extend stands out as a leading AI feature within Premiere Pro. It empowers users to create brief extensions at the beginning or end of video clips, ideal for adding a few extra moments to a scene or transition. Adobe initially introduced Generative Extend in beta in October 2024. Now, the finalized version of Premiere Pro allows rendering these AI-generated clips in 4K and vertical aspect ratios.

To utilize Generative Extend, select the designated tool from the toolbar—represented by a vertical bar with opposing arrows adorned with stars—and drag to extend the clip by one to two seconds. Premiere Pro automatically labels any clip extended or created with AI within the timeline for clear identification.

Users can experiment with Generative Extend for free for a limited introductory phase, after which it will transition to utilizing Firefly generation credits. A standard Premiere Pro subscription includes 500 monthly generation credits, while the comprehensive Creative Cloud package provides 1,000. The consumption of credits per extension will vary based on factors such as resolution, with higher resolution extensions likely requiring more credits. Adobe’s AI usage policy explicitly states that user content is not used to train their AI models, ensuring user privacy.

Enhanced Media Search with Smart Media Intelligence

A fundamental lesson for new Premiere Pro editors is the critical importance of meticulous clip naming and file organization for efficient media library management. This practice ensures quick retrieval of specific clips and prevents disruptive “media not found” errors. However, this process can be labor-intensive. The new Media Intelligence panel addresses this challenge.

Media Intelligence functions as an advanced search interface designed to simplify clip discovery. Beyond traditional searches by file name and location, it can identify and retrieve clips based on visual elements—such as subjects like “skateboarders” or technical aspects like lens flares—or combinations, such as “clips of skateboarders with lens flares.” This advanced search capability aims to facilitate easier access to needed footage, even when file names or metadata are not precisely descriptive.

Leveraging clip metadata, including date of capture and camera model, Media Intelligence allows for highly specific searches. It can also pinpoint segments within longer videos, enabling users to quickly locate specific interview excerpts without manual scrubbing.

Media Intelligence operates locally on the user’s system, ensuring that clip information is neither accessed nor stored externally.

AI-Powered Caption Translation

Premiere Pro’s auto-captioning feature is also significantly upgraded with the addition of translation capabilities. Adobe has acknowledged user demand for multilingual caption support within the same clip. This new tool directly addresses this need, enabling translation workflows without leaving Premiere Pro.

The existing auto-transcription functionality in Premiere Pro allows users to generate video transcripts and subsequently create captions. The enhanced feature now extends this by enabling the translation of these captions into 27 languages, including widely used languages such as Spanish, German, French, and Japanese.
