Mensik Clinches Miami Open Title After Knee Injury Scare in Djokovic Defeat

In a stunning upset at the Miami Open final, Czech teenager Jakub Mensik secured the first title of his burgeoning career, overcoming world number one Novak Djokovic in a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) victory on Sunday. Mensik disclosed post-match that severe right knee inflammation nearly forced him to withdraw from the prestigious tennis tournament.

Injury Concerns Preceded Mensik’s Opening Match

The 19-year-old player revealed he was on the verge of pulling out of the competition just before his opening match against Roberto Bautista Agut. Seeking to formally withdraw, Mensik headed to the referee’s office but found it unattended due to lunchtime. He then opted to consult with the tournament physiotherapist instead.

“I Couldn’t Walk, I Couldn’t Run,” Mensik Recounts

“It was significant inflammation. I was unable to walk or run,” Mensik explained. “I commenced treatment and began taking pain medication, but it provided no relief. On matchday, the situation remained unchanged. I attempted to use the treadmill, but I couldn’t even move. At that point, I thought, ‘Okay, this is it. I’m going to withdraw.’”

“I was on my way to the referee to officially withdraw, but he was at lunch. So, I decided to see the physio first. I went there and informed them about my knee pain and asked them to prepare the withdrawal paperwork.”

Physiotherapist’s Assessment and a Change of Heart

Mensik stated that the physiotherapist examined his knee and concluded that the issue was not critical. “I then thought, ‘Okay, let’s try one more time.’ I returned to the treadmill, and the pain persisted. However, I pushed through it. I was definitely in discomfort at that moment,” Mensik admitted.

“After several minutes, I began to experience some alleviation. I took different pain relievers, which offered a slight improvement. I thought, ‘Okay, let’s give it a try. It’s about 30 minutes before the match. I can walk and run. Let’s see what happens.’”

Momentum Builds with Each Victory

“Somehow, I managed to win the first round, and the subsequent day off was incredibly beneficial for my knee. With each passing day, my knee improved, and consequently, so did my performance on court.”

Mensik’s Aspirations and Djokovic’s Praise

Looking ahead, Mensik expressed hope that his Miami Open triumph would mark the beginning of a successful career. “I am still only 19, with my entire career ahead of me,” he stated. “It is a fantastic feeling to have this trophy, but my ambitions extend beyond a single title or tournament. I am eager for further success.”

Djokovic Acknowledges Mensik’s Potential

Despite his own disappointment in missing his 100th ATP title, Djokovic voiced his satisfaction in witnessing Mensik realize his promising potential.

“Losing is never enjoyable, but he is among the very few players to whom I wouldn’t mind losing, to be honest,” Djokovic remarked. “I had observed him playing at 15 or 16 and invited him to training sessions at my club in Belgrade [in 2022]. It’s truly remarkable to witness his development and progression.”

“I could already discern back then that he possessed the potential to become a world-class player. I am extremely pleased to see him utilize his potential, as he possesses a complete game.”

“His serve is exceptional – powerful, precise, and earning him numerous easy points. His backhand is also strong, typical of the Czech tennis school known for excellent backhands. Furthermore, his forehand has significantly improved. Considering his height and build, his court coverage, sliding and movement are impressive. Naturally, there is still room for improvement, and I am confident we will be seeing him around for a long time.”

Djokovic Reflects on His Performance

Reflecting on his own play, Djokovic concluded, “It’s unfortunate for me as I wasn’t feeling my best on the court, but that’s how it goes. His victory is well-deserved and should not be diminished in any way.”
