Controversy Erupts at Girona Challenger: Pablo Carreno Busta in Umpire Confrontation

Tense moments unfolded at the Girona Challenger tennis tournament on Thursday when player Pablo Carreno Busta engaged in a heated dispute with a chair umpire, even appearing to shove the official during an argument over a call. The incident occurred during Carreno Busta’s match against Iliyan Radulov, creating a spectacle that has sparked debate in the tennis world.

Heated Exchange During Crucial Tie-Break

The controversial scene arose during a critical final set tie-break in the Girona Challenger match. Carreno Busta, a former world No. 10, vehemently disagreed with a ruling, leading to a dramatic confrontation on court.

  • Pablo Carreno Busta and Iliyan Radulov faced off in the last-16 at the Girona Challenger.
  • A heated exchange occurred in the final set tie-break following a disputed call.
  • Carreno Busta argued with the umpire and requested the presence of a supervisor.

Umpire Decision Sparks Outburst

Following a line judge’s call that indicated Iliyan Radulov’s shot was out, chair umpire Ali Katebi intervened. Katebi descended from his chair to inspect the mark on the clay court and subsequently overruled the initial call, deeming the ball to be in. This reversal ignited Carreno Busta’s fury.

Visibly angered by the umpire’s decision, Carreno Busta approached Katebi as the official returned to his chair. The Spaniard voiced his ุงุนุชุฑุงุถ in strong terms, insisting that the match should not continue without the intervention of a tournament supervisor.

Carreno Busta was unhappy with the call at a crucial point in the final set.

Despite the controversy, the Spaniard secured victory and advanced to the quarter-finals.

Verbal Sparring and Physical Contact

“But why? Why at this exact moment?” Carreno Busta questioned, before appearing to place his hands on the umpire.

“Call the supervisor. Summon the supervisor. Issue me a warning if you must, but call the supervisor,” he demanded after the incident of physical contact.

Umpire Katebi responded, “Do not shout at me, okay? What justification will you provide to the supervisor? For a ball call, I cannot call the supervisor.”

Carreno Busta retorted, “You are wrong to make this decision. You are incompetent, and the ball was clearly out. They called the ball out!”

“Call the supervisor because I am not in agreement with your officiating. We cannot proceed under these conditions,” Carreno Busta insisted.

Resolution and Match Continuation

Consequently, the umpire issued Carreno Busta a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, stating, “I must issue you a code violation for touching me. You need to provide a valid reason to call for the supervisor.”

“Fine, issue me a warning. I refuse to continue playing while you are officiating because of your poor performance,” Carreno Busta responded, remaining seated on his bench and refusing to resume play.

Eventually, the supervisor arrived on court. Following a lengthy discussion, it was determined that the point would be replayed.

Carreno Busta Advances

Ultimately, the resolution seemed to satisfy Carreno Busta, who went on to win the match against Radulov with a score of 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(4). This victory secured his place in the quarter-finals, where he is scheduled to compete against Marin Cilic.
