Buccaneers’ Tristan Wirfs Jokes About Protecting ‘Fragile’ Tom Brady Like His Mother

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs playfully mocked legendary quarterback Tom Brady, drawing a humorous comparison between protecting the NFL icon and caring for his own mother. The comments, made during a recent podcast appearance, highlight the generational gap between the two athletes and the perceived need to safeguard the veteran quarterback.

Wirfs Recalls Instructions to Protect Brady

Wirfs, drafted by the Buccaneers in 2020, joined the team the same year as Brady, despite being two decades younger than the celebrated quarterback. Tasked with shielding the seven-time Super Bowl champion, Wirfs, then a fresh NFL recruit, found himself in a unique position.

During a lighthearted discussion on the ‘Calm Down with Erin and Charissa’ podcast, Wirfs recounted the directives he received upon joining the Buccaneers. He humorously recalled being told, “Don’t let anybody touch him,” referring to Brady. Wirfs added his own playful commentary, “Alright, I’ll try my best — he’s fragile, he’s old. Not that old, not that old!”

Comparing Brady to Mom

Continuing the humorous comparison, the offensive lineman pointed out Brady’s age relative to his family. “He’s like two years younger than my mom!”, Wirfs exclaimed, immediately adding “Sorry, sorry, sorry!” in jest.

Tristan Wirfs joked about Tom Brady by comparing the legendary quarterback to his mom.

Wirfs, who is 21 years younger than Brady, was tasked with protecting the iconic quarterback.

‘He’s like two years younger than my mom!,’ the offensive tackle remarked. ‘Sorry, sorry, sorry!’

Wirfs’ Protection Contributed to Buccaneers’ Super Bowl Victory

Despite the jokes, Wirfs proved highly effective in his role. During the 2020 regular season, Brady was sacked only 21 times, a testament to Wirfs’ protection. In fact, 22 other quarterbacks experienced more frequent sacks that season.

Brady’s move to Tampa Bay proved successful, culminating in a Super Bowl LV triumph over the Kansas City Chiefs. The quarterback, who joined the Buccaneers after departing from the New England Patriots, recently disclosed that “tension” with Patriots coach Bill Belichick played a role in his exit.

Brady’s Patriots Exit Due to ‘Tension’ with Belichick

Brady and Belichick enjoyed a remarkable 20-season partnership in New England, securing six Super Bowl championships. However, the famed “Patriot Way,” Belichick’s rigorous and disciplined team culture, eventually contributed to a rift.

In his newsletter, Brady explained, “After twenty years together, a natural tension had developed between where Coach Belichick and I were headed in our careers, and where the Patriots were moving as a franchise.”

He further elaborated that this “tension” necessitated either a “split” or a “reassessment of priorities” from one of the parties involved.
