Sex Education Star Reacts to Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor Who Tenure Amidst Exit Rumors
A Sex Education actor has shared their thoughts on Ncuti Gatwa‘s time as the Fifteenth Doctor, amidst circulating reports suggesting the Scottish actor may “quit” the series. Despite only beginning his tenure in the iconic role in December 2023, numerous reports have indicated that Gatwa is set to depart Doctor Who after the upcoming 15th season concludes later this year. This news follows prior reports that suggested the BBC intended to discontinue the popular science fiction program, claims which network executives have firmly refuted. Gatwa, 32, made history as the first Black actor to portray the Time Lord. According to reports, Gatwa has reportedly already filmed his “regeneration exit scene.”
Co-star Jim Howick’s Perspective
Speaking exclusively to Express Online at the Royal Society Programme Awards, Jim Howick, Gatwa’s Sex Education co-star who played Colin Hendricks, offered his opinion on Gatwa securing the role of The Doctor.
Howick stated, “I’m incredibly proud of Ncuti and all of my students from Mordale. I always anticipated Ncutiβs career trajectory would continuously ascend, and I am immensely pleased for him.” He added, “You know, they weren’t children; they were adults at that time.”

Gatwa’s breakthrough performance as Eric Effiong in the successful Netflix series Sex Education earned him a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor in 2020. He remained with the show for four seasons before accepting the role of Doctor Who in 2023.
The science fiction program is scheduled to return to screens on Saturday, April 12th, on BBC One and iPlayer. Millie Gibson is set to return as Ruby Sunday, and Varada Sethu will join the cast as a new companion.
BBC Denies Series Shelving and Gatwa Departure Claims
In a statement issued last month, a BBC spokesperson addressed the ongoing speculation, stating: “This story is inaccurate; Doctor Who has not been shelved. As previously communicated, the decision regarding season 3 will be determined after season 2 is broadcast. The agreement with Disney+ was for 26 episodes, with exactly half remaining unaired. Regarding speculation about the Doctor and future storylines, we consistently refrain from commenting.”
Low Viewership and Hollywood Speculation
Upon its premiere, Gatwa’s inaugural season of Doctor Who attracted 2.6 million viewers on BBC One. The Sun newspaper has also reported that production crew members working on the latest season have been informed not to anticipate further work on another Doctor Who season “for another decade.” An unnamed source reportedly told the publication, “Ncuti does not wish to remain committed to the series beyond this season and intends to relocate to Los Angeles, with several Hollywood projects awaiting him.”
