Your Sky Q box just lost two popular channels as new TV shake-up confirmed

Sky Q Customers to Lose Access to Channels in Latest Update

Viewers with Sky Q boxes connected to their televisions will soon discover a reduction in available content. It has been officially announced that two channels are being removed from Sky’s popular set-top boxes, meaning households will lose the ability to watch these services. The channels being discontinued are Sky History +1 SD and Sky History 2 HD. This adjustment impacts subscribers seeking historical programming.

Channel Removal Explained

These channels are part of an agreement between Sky and Hearst Networks UK, the owners of the History Channel brand. While there has been no official statement regarding the reason for this discontinuation, it is confirmed that popular programmes such as “UnXplained with William Shatner” and “Washington,” will remain accessible through other History channels and on-demand platforms.

Impact on Sky Services

Crucially, these changes will not affect the main Sky History channel or Sky History 2 in standard definition (SD). Although the removal of these channels may disappoint some subscribers, Sky is emphasizing that Sky Q customers can still access over 290 channels via their devices. Contrary to speculation that Sky Q might be discontinued, this alteration in channel line-up is not indicative of Sky Q being phased out.

Sky’s Streaming Focus and Sky Q’s Future

It is widely understood that Sky is currently prioritizing the growth of its streaming services. One industry analyst recently suggested this strategic direction could eventually lead to the discontinuation of Sky Q. “Ultimately, Sky would prefer to migrate all users to its internet protocol (IP)-based products, which in turn will lead to the eventual end of Sky Q,” noted Paolo Pescatore, a leading analyst, in comments to The Sun.

Continued Support for Sky Q

However, during the recent launch event for the Sky Glass Gen 2, Sky assured Express.co.uk of its ongoing commitment to Sky Q. The company stated they will continue to provide support and upgrades for the platform, reaffirming its place in their service offerings.

Spotlight on Sky Glass Gen 2

Currently, Sky’s primary focus is on its broadband-powered devices, particularly the Sky Glass Gen 2. This updated television features a brighter display, a refined design for simpler setup, and enhanced audio from its integrated speakers.

Sky Glass Gen 2 Features:

  • Superior picture quality with a brighter screen
  • Simplified installation due to improved design
  • Enhanced sound performance from built-in speakers
  • Access to a comprehensive selection of premium channels without a satellite dish
  • User-friendly features including voice search and a backlit remote
  • Online Playlists for recording content
  • Personalized viewing recommendations for each family member
  • Available in a range of sizes and colours

Pricing for Sky Glass Gen 2 starts at Β£14 per month; however, this base price excludes access to Sky’s channel library and 4K viewing, with costs increasing based on added features and content packages.
