Jason Kelce Intensifies Weight Loss Journey After NFL Retirement
Philadelphia Eagles legend Jason Kelce is pushing his fitness goals further as he continues his post-NFL career weight management. Since retiring from professional football last March after 13 seasons as a celebrated center, Kelce has openly discussed his commitment to losing weight. The former NFL star initially aimed to shed 35 pounds and recently disclosed on Wednesday that he has already lost 20 pounds in the year since leaving the field.
Stepping Up the Fitness Challenge
To reach his desired weight, Kelce is elevating his efforts. On the “New Heights” podcast this Wednesday, he announced a competitive weight loss challenge with former teammate Beau Allen, focused on reducing body fat percentage.
Bone Density Scan Provides Baseline
To ensure a level playing field for their contest, Kelce underwent a bone density scan for the first time. He discussed the results with his brother, Travis, on their podcast.
Revealing Body Composition
“There is considerable fat in there!” Kelce commented on the podcast after reviewing the scan results. “It’s somewhat embarrassing to see your physique analyzed in this detail. However,” he added, jokingly, “I must admit, the calf-to-hamstring ratio is quite favorable, I believe.”
He disclosed his weight based on the scan: “I weigh 276.6 pounds according to this assessment.”
“You’ve already lost 30 pounds? That’s incredible,” Travis remarked, before Jason clarified, “I’ve lost 20 pounds. I was never above 300 pounds during my NFL career.”
Going into further detail, Jason stated, “Lean mass, 207 pounds of muscle. 58.7 pounds of fat… that is a significant amount of fat,” and continued, “According to these measurements, my body fat percentage is precisely 21.2 percent.”
“We need to decrease that,” Travis asserted, who previously confirmed his return to the Kansas City Chiefs for the upcoming season, putting off retirement.
The Body Fat Reduction Competition
Jason, anticipating his brother’s reaction, had already established the friendly competition with Allen.
“This illustrates why you are still playing football; retirement necessitates engaging in silly contests like this to maintain one’s sanity,” Jason told the three-time Super Bowl champion. “So, Beau and I will be competing to see who can reduce their body fat percentage the most over three months.”
Competition Rules and Stakes
The two former Eagles players have created a point system based on percentage of body fat lost and muscle gained to determine the victor.
The consequence for losing has also been decided. The unfortunate former NFL player who loses the challenge will be obligated to wear a Speedo to Ocean Drive, an annual event supporting the Eagles Autism Foundation, held each summer.
Past Remarks on Weight Loss Benefits
Kelce has previously spoken candidly about his weight loss efforts, telling GQ last year about the positive impacts he was already experiencing.
“Currently, I am around 277 pounds,” he stated last June. “… It’s challenging to envision losing another nearly 20 pounds, to be honest. But my back already feels improved. My knees are feeling better. Hopefully, losing another 20 pounds will further enhance my ability to play with my children.”
“I am mindful of not becoming too slender,” the soon-to-be father-of-four added. “I believe many individuals, particularly offensive linemen, lose excessive weight and end up appearing disproportionate because their necks become too thin while their heads remain the same size.”
“For me, I feel that somewhere between 250 and 260 pounds, I will still appear substantial and be content with my physique without necessarily having a six-pack, yet I will still maintain a respectable build.”
