Body of Riley Strain Recovered from Cumberland River
The body of Riley Strain, the missing student who disappeared earlier this month, was discovered in the Cumberland River in West Nashville on Friday morning. According to Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief John Drake, a local worker alerted authorities to the discovery at approximately 7:28 a.m. on March 22. The confirmation of the body as that of Riley Strain concludes an extensive search effort that involved law enforcement and the Nashville community.
Identification Confirmed by Authorities
The Davidson County Medical Examiner’s Office formally identified the remains as belonging to Riley Strain. Chief Drake noted that visual cues including Strain’s distinct black and white shirt and a watch further corroborated the identification at the scene prior to official confirmation.
Police Chief Expresses Condolences
“To the Strain family, I extend my deepest sympathies and prayers during this incredibly difficult and tragic time,” stated Chief Drake during a press briefing. He also acknowledged the widespread community support, saying, “I want to express gratitude to the Nashville community for the immense support and assistance in the search for Mr. Strain.”
Search Efforts and River Conditions
Investigators, considering factors such as Strain’s physical description and river conditions, had anticipated the potential location and timing of the body surfacing if he had entered the water. “Given the 14 days that have passed,” the Chief explained, “we anticipated finding him imminently, and unfortunately, this proved to be the case.”
Chief Drake also indicated preliminary findings suggest the circumstances point towards an accidental fall into the river. “At this stage, there is no evidence suggesting foul play or any scenario other than a fall into the Cumberland River,” he affirmed.
Family’s Presence and Heartfelt Message
Riley Strain’s parents and stepfather were present at police headquarters later that day, all wearing green, reportedly his favorite color, WKRN reported.
Riley’s mother, Michelle, addressed reporters with an emotional plea, stating, “I just ask that all mothers listening, please hold your children close tonight. For me, please just hug your babies tightly tonight. And thank you, again, thank you for sharing our story and the support you have given.”
