US Vice-President JD Vance has announced a forthcoming visit to Greenland, scheduled for Friday, accompanied by his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance. Mrs. Vance is slated to arrive on the island a day prior to commence a two-day engagement, highlighted by her attendance at a husky sled race. This visit underscores rising international interest in Greenland’s strategic importance and regional security dynamics.
Vice-President Vance to Assess Greenland Security
Vice-President Vance confirmed his plans to join his wife via a post on social media platform X, indicating his intention to “see how things were going there.” In an accompanying video message, he elaborated on his decision, stating, “There was so much excitement around Usha’s visit to Greenland this Friday that I decided that I didn’t want her to have all that fun by herself, and so I’m going to join her.”
He further outlined the objectives of his visit, noting, “I’m going to visit some of our guardians in the Space Force on the northwest coast of Greenland, and also just check out what’s going on with the security there of Greenland.”

Concerns Over External Threats to Greenland
Expanding on the rationale behind his trip, Mr. Vance conveyed concerns regarding potential threats to Greenland’s territorial integrity. “As you know,” he stated, “it’s really important. A lot of other countries have threatened Greenland, have threatened to use its territories and its waterways to threaten the United States, to threaten Canada, and, of course, to threaten the people of Greenland.”
He continued, “So we’re going to check out how things are going there. And I say that, speaking for President Trump, we want to reinvigorate the security of the people of Greenland, because we think it’s important to protecting the security of the entire world.”
Mr. Vance also expressed critical views regarding past policy approaches, asserting, “Unfortunately, leaders in both America and in Denmark I think ignored Greenland for far too long.”
“That’s been bad for Greenland. It’s also been bad for the security of the entire world, we think we can take things in a different direction. So I’m gonna go check it out,” he concluded.
Greenland and Denmark Respond to Vance’s Visit
Mr. Vance’s remarks are unlikely to be well-received by political figures in Greenland and Denmark. Greenland is currently under the protectorate of Denmark.
In a public statement released on Monday, outgoing Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede, leader of the Inuit Ataqatigiit party, communicated to the Semitsiaq newspaper, “The very aggressive American pressure on Greenlandic society is now so serious that the level cannot rise any higher.”
Mr. Egede’s statement further emphasized the lack of progress in addressing these pressures, stating, “Standing together in Greenland has not helped, saying no has not helped, and diplomatic attempts at dialogue have been in vain. Now the international community must react.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also voiced her concerns, stating, βThis is clearly not a visit that is about what Greenland needs or wants.”
βIt is unacceptable pressure being put on Greenland and Denmark, and itβs a pressure we will stand against,β Ms. Frederiksen affirmed.
Trump Administration’s Interest in Greenland
Since November 2024, former President Trump has repeatedly indicated his interest in acquiring Greenland, stressing its crucial strategic value for U.S. national security interests.
In January 2025, he further stated that he would not dismiss the option of employing military or economic measures to procure the territory.
This position has consistently encountered strong opposition from Greenland’s leadership, who have firmly dismissed any proposals of selling or relinquishing their sovereignty.
