ITV The Chase's Mark Labbett hits out at show bosses over lack of 'control'

The Chase Stars Mark Labbett and Bradley Walsh Reveal Production Control on ITV Quiz Show

Mark Labbett, a prominent quiz expert on ITV’s popular show The Chase, has previously voiced concerns regarding the extent of production control over the program. The 59-year-old personality indicated that show producers heavily influence various aspects of The Chase, limiting the autonomy of the Chasers, presenter Bradley Walsh, and even the contestants.

Labbett’s Social Media Remarks on Production Influence

Earlier this year, Labbett took to social media to express his frustration with certain production decisions and their potential impact on the show’s outcome. In a series of online posts, “The Beast,” as he is known on the show, critiqued elements affecting gameplay:

  • He noted an increase in low offers to contestants, suggesting a possible shift in strategy.
  • Labbett implied that the level of difficulty might be skewed, potentially reducing contestants’ chances of winning, particularly teams scoring below 17 points in the cash builder round.
  • He speculated on the strategic choices made by producers in team selection, hinting at the importance of strong player composition for success.

In a concluding social media message, Labbett emphasized the significant role of the production team. “Keep in mind,” he stated, “the production team dictates nearly everything: contestant selection, question choices, cash offers, seating arrangements… Brad and the Chasers are primarily there to perform to the best of their abilities within these parameters.”

Bradley Walsh Highlights Strict Adherence to Show Rules

Adding to the discussion of production oversight, Bradley Walsh, the 64-year-old host of The Chase, has also acknowledged the rigorous regulations governing the show. Walsh revealed that strict adherence to the established rules is mandatory, and deviations could lead to intervention from the show’s legal team. He explained that his performance is closely monitored during filming, and he has, at times, been cautioned for the pace of his question delivery.

Pacing and Question Scrutiny

Walsh elaborated on the precise timing requirements, stating he must maintain a consistent speed when reading questions for both contestants and Chasers. Speaking with Radio Times, Walsh illustrated the importance of pacing: “If you’re a contestant and I go ‘what’s… the capital… of France… ‘ they’d be defeated very quickly.”

Reportedly, Walsh’s question delivery speed averages between 3.6 and 4 seconds per question. The Chase’s management employs an independent compliance firm, Beyond Dispute, to oversee the question process. Furthermore, Walsh disclosed that he does not receive the questions beforehand. Consequently, any mispronunciation or stumble during question reading necessitates a retake.

Legal Oversight in the Studio

The ITV personality further explained the immediate consequences of any error: “If there is a slight misreading, I am stopped immediately – bang – by the lawyers.” He confirmed the постоянное presence of compliance lawyers on set “all the time” to ensure regulations are upheld.
