Shower Time Debate: Is it Better to Shower in the Morning or at Night?

The habit of showering in the morning before commencing work is a long-held routine. However, with the increase in remote working following the Covid-19 pandemic, the necessity for a morning shower has diminished for many. The elimination of the daily commute to the office means individuals can now forgo the morning cleanse and choose to shower in the evening instead.

Expert Weighs In on Optimal Shower Time for Health

A medical professional has shared insights on whether showering at night provides greater advantages for health and well-being compared to showering in the morning. Dr. Aragona Giuseppe, a general practitioner and medical advisor at Prescription Doctor, explained to Glamour magazine that while a pre-work wash is common, primarily because “it invigorates the senses and provides a refreshing start to the day.”

Night Showers for Relaxation and Hygiene

Dr. Giuseppe further stated that beyond inducing relaxation before sleep, showering in the evening after the day’s activities can offer enhanced health benefits.

Removing Daily Pollutants and Improving Skin Health

He elaborated, stating, “The primary advantage of night-time showers is that throughout the day, your body and hair accumulate airborne allergens and irritants, alongside dirt and grime. This is especially relevant during summer months with pollen, environmental chemicals, and perspiration.”

“Consequently, sleeping without showering allows these substances to transfer to bedding and sheets. This can contribute to unhygienic bedding and nocturnal allergies. Moreover, it might lead to skin irritation, dryness, and facial skin problems like acne resulting from daytime oil and dirt accumulating on pillowcases and sheets.”

Shower Length Matters for Skin Health

Beyond the timing of showers, the duration is also crucial. Dermatologist Emma Amoafo-Mensah suggests limiting shower time to under ten minutes.

Optimal Shower Duration for Healthy Skin

“Many individuals are spending excessive time showering; the recommended duration should be less than ten minutes,” she stated in an interview with Metro newspaper.

“Showering for longer periods escalates the likelihood of skin dryness and irritation, particularly if the water is excessively hot and you are predisposed to dry skin.”
