Jamal Adams is on the hunt for a new football destination. On Wednesday, the Lions released the contentious former Jets safety from their practice roster just one month after he joined the club.
Previously in the season, Adams was with the Titans but was also let go by that team. Now the three-time Pro Bowler is once again on the lookout for a team to take a chance on him for the upcoming season.
The Quest for a New Headcount
During his brief stint with the Lions, Adams saw limited action, participating in two games as a practice squad call-up. He was on the field for a mere 20 defensive plays for Detroit.
This development comes just days after an interview was published, in which Adams expressed enthusiasm for the chance he had in Detroit with the Lions.
Adams Looks Forward
“Clearly, it’s an outstanding opportunity,” Adams remarked to football journalist Tyler Dunne. “After requesting a release from Tennessee, I went home, decompressed. I took some time away to ensure that I’m in it for the right reasons, to pursue my goals and continue my career. I trained the entire time while I was at home.”
He further added: “I received the call from Detroit, and it was an easy decision for me. What an opportunity to chase a championship. That’s what it’s all about.”
The Impact of Past Decisions
Since requesting a trade from the Jets — the team that selected him sixth overall in 2017 — Adams’ career has hit several bumps. In 2020, he was granted the trade request and joined the Seahawks.
The Turn of Events
The rift between Adams and the Jets has made him a divisive figure in recent franchise history. Since the trade, his career has been marked by inconsistent performances and injuries.
Adams spent four seasons with the Seahawks. In 2022, a torn quad tendon in Week 1 ended his season, signaling a notable decline.
During the 2024 offseason, he was released and briefly joined the Tennessee team.
Reflections on Previous Choices
Adams recently voiced regret over his decision to request a trade from the Jets.
“I didn’t realize I had that much impact,” he said. “As I grew older, I realized, ‘You had everything besides the winning. All you could ask for from a player.’ But things didn’t work out. I requested the trade. Looking back now, I would advise myself, ‘Don’t let emotions drive your decisions.'”
