Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has claimed that some Manchester United players had stopped ‘running and caring’ towards the end of his tenure at the club.

Solskjaer was sacked by United in November 2021 following a 4-1 defeat away to Watford.

United had fallen two goals behind at Vicarage Road following strikes from Josh King and Ismaila Sarr, with Solskjaer stating that some of his players had given up by that point.

A goal from Donny van de Beek provided United with some hope, but Watford struck twice late on through Joao Pedro and Emmanuel Dennis, with United defender Harry Maguire having earlier been sent off.

Solskjaer told The National: ‘There were many lows. I’m one of them who looks back at the lows more than the highs.

Solskjaer left the club in the aftermath of United’s 4-1 loss against Watford in November 2021

‘The end at Watford, well you can’t get lower than that. I more or less knew at half time, so my team talk was about enjoying the last 45 minutes together and giving their all.

‘Some of them had stopped running, caring. But then in the second half we played well. Donny [Van de Beek] came on and scored.

‘We should have scored more. Then we got a sending off. 2-1 until the 94th minute.

‘It sounds really bad that it was a 4-1 defeat. It was bad to lose against Watford but it wasn’t a 4-1 game.’

Former United forward Solskjaer left the club the day after the defeat to Watford.

After initially taking caretaker charge of United in December 2018, Solskjaer oversaw 168 games, winning 91, drawing 37 and losing 40.

United reached the Europa League final in 2021 under Solskjaer but were beaten on penalties by Villarreal.

In the 2020-21 Premier League season United finished in second place, twelve points behind rivals Manchester City. They had finished third in the previous campaign and sixth in 2018-19. United were seventh at the time of Solskjaer’s departure in 2021.
