Erasure singer Andy Bell’s ‘disgraceful showing’ forces festival organisers to apologise

Erasure singer Andy Bell’s recent performance at Rewind South sparked so many complaints that organisers have been forced to issue and apology.

The 59-year-old singer took to the stage as a solo performer at the Rewind South Festival in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, as the headline act on Saturday, August 19, to a less than rapturous reception from fans.

Video footage of his set, widely available online, shows a clearly disorientated Andy singing out of tune and rambling in between songs. The crowd can clearly be heard booing and chanting “off”.

Indeed the audience was so unimpressed that many walked out and lodged official complaints with the organisers, forcing Rewind to respond.

In an official statement, they said: “Rewind Festival present in the region of 45 artists across each weekend on all stages and rely on a professional standard from artists and musicians to deliver a high-quality performance.

“We realise that the performance from Andy Bell fell short of that. The festival was not made aware of any situation that would lead to this below par performance in advance of the show.

“The artists and their management are responsible for the delivery of their set and at no point were we notified that there was going to be any problem, so were not in a position to assess this before it was too late.

“Once the show was underway, we felt that it would be better to allow it to continue in the hope that this would be an improving situation – this clearly wasn’t the case.

“Whilst we are genuinely sorry that this occurred it was something beyond our controls as, had it been flagged, we would have dealt with it accordingly.”

Fans flocked to social media to lambast the performance from the chart-topping singer of classic songs such as A Little Respect, Blue Savannah, Stop and Love To Hate You. have contacted representatives for Rewind South and Andy Bell for comment.

@MrsSharonGraves took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to write: “Unfortunately this will be our last rewind. What an absolute shambles. Shame on you rewind. Our safety came last over your greed!

“Too many people crammed in, and as for Andy Bell, just no words.!! #rewind #rewindfestival #rewindsouth.” (sic)

@GGreggles999 tweeted: “Rewind ruined by Andy Bell.” Meanwhile, a user called @BigJAU commented: “#Rewind disgraceful showing from Andy Bell. He could hardly speak never mind sing. A real sad ending to a great day.”

@johnatkn responded: “Totally agree, event management should have realised he was not fit to perform. There was a mass exodus with people looking shocked. One person said they thought there was an emergency.”
