High-rise horror as young child risks his life playing hide-and-seek on narrow ledge

Hair-raising footage has shown a child apparently playing hide and seek on the ledge of a high-rise building in China.

The clip was shared by police in an attempt to encourage parents to keep a close eye on youngsters living in tower blocks.

During the course of the 18-second clip, the youngster – who appears to be no older than seven or eight – can be seen crouching down on the ledge.

A woman – presumably his mother – then leans out of the open window in a likely attempt to persuade him to climb back through it.

Eventually, he complies, scrambling to safety, seemingly oblivious as to the danger he had placed himself in.

The footage was captured by a neighbour in the city of Zhengzhou in Henan province, who shouted at the child to go back inside.

Writing on social media, police said: “Be a good neighbour and remind parents to take good care of their children.”

The incident is far from isolated.

Separate footage shot in May shows the moment an even younger boy roams freely around the sixth-floor balcony of a flat in the south of the country, before climbing on to a guardrail in an attempt to reach a tricycle an outer ledge made for an air conditioning unit.

A neighbour shouts at the youngster to get down, startling him, at which point he sits with his back turned.

The authorities later contacted his parents, who removed the items from the ledge and thanked the neighbour.

The clip was shared on Douyin, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok, with viewers criticising the boy’s parents for leaving him unsupervised.

One wrote: “They’re not being responsible at all.

“I’m really speechless!

“It will be too late for regrets after he falls!”
