Succession succeeds! Fans react to the EPIC 90-minute finale that left the Roy family in shambles

HBO’s hit drama series Succession came to an epic conclusion on Sunday night with its 90-minute series finale, which has set social media ablaze with comments.

The series finale – entitled With Open Eyes – lead up to the important Waystar Royco board meeting, where the final vote on the merger with Lukas Matsson’s (Alexander Skarsgard) GoJo was held.

The episode’s many twists and turns, iconic moments and stand-out lines were so popular that topics like ‘Tom Wambsgans,’ ‘Kendall,’ ‘Jeremy Strong’ and ‘I AM THE ELDEST BOY’ were trending topics across Twitter on Sunday evening.

The episode began with Kendall (Jeremy Strong) getting ready to take on his sister Shiv (Sarah Snook), hoping to get enough votes from the Waystar Royco board members to block the GoJo merger, allowing the siblings to keep the company their father created.

When it all was said and done, though, the merger was approved by the board, and it was Tom Wambsgans (Matthew McFadyen), not his wife Shiv, who would succeed his late father-in-law as the new Waystar Royco GoJo CEO… leaving his own family in shambles.

After the merger was announced, Roman went to a bar and had a drink, a sly smile on his face, while Shiv got in Tom’s car and was driven off, presumably back to their apartment where they will presumably continue their embattled relationship.

Kendall, on the other hand, took a walk through a park, taking a seat on a bench, looking out at the ocean… with one sharp Twitter user noticing that each of Succession’s four seasons have ended with Kendall either in or near a body of water.

Twitter user @willajrainbolt shared images from the final shots of each of Succession’s four seasons, adding, ‘One last Kendall Roy water moment to end all Kendall Roy water moments #Succession.’

@blewis1103 tweeted about Roman’s final moments, stating, ‘It’s easy to say that everybody lost, but when the dust settles, Roman will be the most fine. Kendall had it right: he didn’t want it; he only wanted it because his father set that expectation in his abuse cycle. That smile is the tell. He is free (and filthy rich). #Succession.’

While it seemed the Roy siblings were going to win as a solidified team – with Shiv and Roman both ‘anointing’ him as CEO the night before – Shiv had a change of heart at the board meeting, which lead to a heated exchange between Kendall, Shiv and Roman.

That exchange – where the illegitimacy of Kendall’s children, the drowning accident Kendall was involved in that lead to a young man’s death – lead to an awkward brawl of sorts between the siblings, and, ultimately, resulted in them losing the votes they needed, and, ultimately, their father’s company… though they will still be billionaires many times over from the sale.

@RhodeToLove tweeted, ‘Kendall was about to fully crystallize into a Logan-sized monster and Shiv saw that and killed it, what a finale.’

@carolinerenard_ added, ‘Roman had that one in the chamber about Kendall’s kids not being blood. He was ready to call them what Logan actually called them behind their backs. Nasty work. #SuccessionHBO.’

That exchange also featured a line that will surely go down as an all-time classic in TV history, where the siblings are arguing over who their father actually wanted running the company, when Kendall petulantly screams, ‘I AM THE ELDEST BOY!’

The line itself (in all caps) was trending on Twitter shortly after the episode finished, with SlashFilm’s @cevangelista413 tweeting, ‘”I AM THE ELDEST BOY” is an all-timer.’

@jordanzakarin added, ‘I’m going to be yelling “I am the eldest boy” at my brothers for the rest of our lives.’

Others noticed the inherent flaw in Kendall’s logic, since, while he is the oldest of Logan’s children with Caroline Collingwood (Harriet Arthur), Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) is in fact the ‘eldest boy’ of the Roy children.

Vulture tweeted, ‘I am the eldest boy,’ along with a picture of Connor, while @MMonteiro90 pointed out that Connor actually said roughly the same line in Season 3.

‘Everyone tweeting “I AM THE ELDEST BOY” must remember that Connor, the real eldest son, said it first. #Succession.’

@sarahjaeleiber added, ‘I sort of think the whole of this series was leading up to Kendall Roy screaming “I AM THE ELDEST BOY” at his sister in the moment of his life where he most desperately believes he needs to be taken seriously.’

@jaxelburgh shared a popular meme of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Taylor Armstrong yelling with, ‘I AM THE ELDEST BOY’ #Succession.
