Putin 'launches early hours aerial attack on Ukraine for second night in a row'

Ukraine has been rocked by a second consecutive barrage of overnight Russian air strikes, it has been reported.

Explosions were reported in Kyiv during the early hours of this morning as air defence systems were activated across Ukraine’s capital.

The city’s mayor Vitali Klitschko reportedly said on Telegram that first responders were sent to the Holosiivskyi District and that a missile was shot down near Kyiv.

The reports come just 24 hours after Russia battered the capital with what Ukrainian forces said was the largest drone attack on Kyiv since the start of the war.

An air alert was reportedly declared in Kyiv and a number of regions of Ukraine just after midnight on Monday (May 29), which later spread across the whole of the country until around 5am local time.

Air alerts warn of the imminent threat of strikes and civilians are advised to get to bomb shelters as quickly as possible.

Explosions were also reported in Vinnytsia, Poltava and Odesa, according to monitoring groups.

The explosions in Kyiv were reportedly heard just after 3am local time.

Ukraine’s Regional Military Administration confirmed that air defense systems were operating in the city due to the threat of drone attacks, according to the Kyiv Independent. Residents were urged to remain in shelters.

It was later reported that the Kyiv City Military Administration said air defence forces shot down more than 40 targets in what officials said was Russia’s 15th air assault on the city this month.

No major damage or casualties were reported in the latest overnight onslaught.

“Another challenging night for the capital,” Klitschko wrote on his official Telegram. “However, thanks to the professionalism of our defenders, there were no damages or destruction of infrastructure and other facilities, including residential buildings, as a result of the barbaric attack against Kyiv.”

Russia used a combination of Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones and cruise missiles, the city’s military administration reportedly said.

The air raid siren is reported to have prompted the closure of the Minska metro station in Kyiv.

Videos emerged online of people banging on doors outside the station as they were not allowed to enter.

Unconfirmed images and video was also shared on social media appearing to show smoke rising from an unknown location following the activation of the air defence systems.
