ASUS ROG Ally Starts at $599 for Ryzen Z1/256GB SSD Version

Yeah, that is a tougher sale than the ROG Ally Extreme for $699.

Performance-wise this should be around the same ballpark as the SteamDeck, better at emulation thanks to the extra cores, but similar in games because of the limited GPU. What you get over the 256GB SD is a much better display, Windows drivers and RGB. But watt per watt this should be much less efficient, so you will lose in battery and QoL features like the touchpads. While also paying almost $100 more than a similar spec Steam Deck.

Again, not a bad value. If compared to the market as a whole and not just the Steam Deck, the value proposition here is still really good. But is undeniable if the leaked price for the Extreme version is true, that it will be the more sensitive choice if you can spare the extra $100.
